Synopsis

The day after the 2016 presidential election, filmmaker Carlos Sandoval found Ku Klux Klan fliers on the seats of the Long Island Railroad and recounts how his Cuban American niece Lexi's world was "shattered" by the election—she is one of thousands of children wondering if they will be deported or denied benefits under the Trump administration. Other children are taunted on the playground, have their head scarves ripped off, or are left to wonder, "Does Donald Trump not like brown boys like me?" And girls everywhere are devastated that a crass and bigoted bully was elected over the woman poised to become America's first female president.

In the wake of the election, even the most thoughtful and progressive parents across the country found themselves at a loss for words. Borrowing its title from the memorable election night question posed by Van Jones, How Do I Explain This to My Kids? brings together moving first-person accounts by parents including novelist Mira Jacob, Pulitzer Prize winner Viet Thanh Nguyen, scholar Robin D.G. Kelley, New York Times blogger Nicole Chung, and others, who recount their best efforts to parent effectively in the current climate. The second half of the book features advice from leading child psychologist Ava Siegler, whose bestselling book What Should I Tell the Kids? established her as an authority on talking to children about difficult topics. From racism and homophobia to anti-Semitism, lying, sexism, and bullying, Dr. Siegler provides concrete advice for parents of kids of all ages—grade schoolers, preteens, adolescents, and young adults—for helping their children navigate a complicated, difficult time.

There's a secret that most people don't know: our self-image defines our relationship experiences with others. In The Love Habit, author and relationship expert Rainie Howard urges readers toward a better understandingof their relationships with family, friends, society, and themselves. Because a person's self-image directlyinfluences their daily habits (emotional, mental, and physical), which then directly impacts relationships withothers, Howard sets out to help readers change patterns that are no longer working for them. While many of us understand the effects of unhealthy relationships, we are often clueless on how to truly breakfree from them. This is because until we understand why people behave the way they do, and that we areactually subconsciously teaching others how to treat us, we are powerless at transforming this important areaof our lives. To be in healthy relationships--whether with a friend, at work, or in a romantic partnership--we must firststart with the relationship we have with ourselves. Without addressing this missing piece of how we relate toourselves, we end up perpetually stuck in unhealthy friendships, romantic relationships, and more--but alsoengaged in a pattern of repeatedly inviting new unhealthy or toxic relationships into our lives. If you're ready tobreak free of the cycle of unhealthy relationships, The Love Habit is here to show you how.

A restorative and resonant memoir of a year in the life of an aging shepherd

For 50 years, Barbara McLean has tended a flock of Border Leicester sheep on her small Ontario farm, Lambsquarters. In Shepherd’s Sight she shares the crises, pleasures, and challenges of farm life over the course of a year. Now in her 70s, McLean faces a new problem: how much longer she can continue with the physically taxing work that is her central source of meaning and satisfaction.

Through her unsentimental gaze, we witness the highs and heartbreaks of delivering and rearing lambs, the shearing and spinning of wool, the wildlife in the woods (and occasionally in the house), and the garden produce moving from seed to harvest to table. Even after half a century on this land, McLean is still making fresh observations, and she shares them in evocative, elegant prose. As she moves through the calendar year, she also reflects on years past, offering a long view on climate, stewardship, and agriculture.

With its vivid description and absorbing storytelling, Shepherd’s Sight offers an unforgettable glimpse of a life lived on the land.
