Beschreibung

Peace Treaties examines the complex realm of diplomatic agreements, analyzing how treaties designed to end wars either foster lasting stability or sow the seeds of future conflict. It explores the dynamics of treaty negotiations, the specific terms included in peace agreements, and their long-term ramifications on international relations. The book argues that a treaty's durability hinges on its ability to address the root causes of conflict, ensure equitable outcomes, and establish mechanisms for ongoing cooperation. The book stands out by bridging military history, world history, and international relations, providing insights applicable to political science. It analyzes key peace treaties throughout history, such as the Treaty of Westphalia and the Treaty of Versailles, to illustrate different facets of the negotiation process and the impact of specific terms. By examining these case studies, the book offers valuable lessons for contemporary conflict resolution efforts, demonstrating how outcomes of military conflicts are ultimately shaped by political decisions and diplomatic negotiations.Structured to methodically explore its central argument, the book begins by introducing key concepts and theories related to conflict resolution and treaty-making. It then delves into significant peace treaties throughout history, culminating in a synthesis of these case studies. This approach provides practical insights and policy recommendations for crafting more effective and enduring peace agreements, making it a valuable resource for students, policymakers, and anyone interested in understanding the pursuit of peace.

The Gilded Age and the dawn of the 20th century are often remembered as an era full of monopolies, trusts, and economic giants in heavy industries like oil and steel. Men like Andrew Carnegie built empires like Carnegie Steel, and financiers like J.P. Morgan merged and consolidated them. The era also made names like Astor, Cooke, and Vanderbilt instantly recognizable across the globe. Over time, the unfathomable wealth generated by the businesses made the individuals on top incredibly rich, and that in turn led to immense criticism and an infamous epithet used to rail against them: robber barons.
Dozens of men were called “robber barons”, and the industrial might wielded by some of these men in the late 19th century directly led to a public backlash and made President Teddy Roosevelt the “trust buster”, and there has since been countless regulations to attempt to avoid the types of monopolies found over 100 years ago. However, many 20th century historians and writers pushed back against the allegations hurled at the “robber barons” and even took issue with the name. Libertarian writer John Stossel argued, “They weren't robbers, because they didn't steal from anyone, and they weren't barons - they were born poor...” Ironically, one of America’s most famous robber barons, Andrew Carnegie, epitomized the American Dream, migrating with his poor family to America in the mid-19th century and rising to the top of the business world in his adopted country. And like Carnegie, railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt set a precedent of sorts with his philanthropy, most notably his gift to Vanderbilt University, which bears his name. Similarly, the West Coast's most famous railroad mogul became Leland Stanford, who also bequeathed a prestigious university after making it to the top of the industry.

The Spanish conquest of the Americas is a pivotal part of the history of colonization.
Christopher Columbus’s discovery, albeit accidental, of a new landmass turned the world upside-down. Beginning in the late 15th century, the kingdom of Spain spearheaded the effort of colonization, sending expedition after expedition to the Caribbean islands and then to mainland North and South America. Through violence, bloodshed, and conquest, the Spanish conquistadors were able to gain control of the rich and prosperous lands of indigenous American civilizations, laying waste to magnificent political and social entities like the Aztec and Inca Empires.
This audiobook tells the story of how Spain managed to conquer the Americas in the span of half a century, from the late 1400s to the mid-1500s. Although exploitation and warfare continued between the colonizers and the colonized after this period, the largest campaigns against the indigenous peoples were undertaken in this short time span, which is the focus of this audiobook.
This comprehensive guide will cover the following:Columbus and his expeditions, which encouraged other Europeans to start colonizationThe makeup of indigenous American societies, from their social hierarchies and complex cultures to diverse political structuresColonization of the Caribbean islands and the establishment of the Spanish West IndiesThe arrival of Hernán Cortés and his groundbreaking expedition into the Aztec Empire in modern-day MexicoThe conquest of the Maya civilization in the Yucatán Peninsula and the power dynamics between different power-hungry conquistador groups thereThe magnificent Inca Empire in the South American Andes and its conquest by Francisco Pizarro

Follow along a Navy SEAL's firsthand account of American heroism during a secret military operation in Afghanistan in this true story of survival and difficult choices. On a clear night in late June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive. This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing. Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers. A six-foot-five-inch Texan, Leading Petty Officer Luttrell takes us, blow by blow, through the brutal training of America's warrior elite and the relentless rites of passage required by the Navy SEALs. He transports us to a monstrous battle fought in the desolate peaks of Afghanistan, where the beleaguered American team plummeted headlong a thousand feet down a mountain as they fought back through flying shale and rocks. In this rich, moving chronicle of courage, honor, and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare -- and a tribute to his teammates, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
