Synopsis

Maritime Wars explores the U.S. Navy's crucial role in shaping American interests and establishing the nation as a global maritime power. It argues that naval conflicts are not isolated events but are fundamentally linked to historical, economic, and political trends. For example, the War of 1812 demonstrated how a young American navy could challenge a dominant British fleet, influencing national sovereignty and trade routes. The book presents a detailed overview of U.S. naval history, highlighting how naval power has influenced diplomatic relations and secured economic interests. Beginning with early naval engagements like the War of 1812, the narrative progresses through the 19th and 20th centuries, examining key conflicts and the evolution of naval strategies. The book analyzes modern maritime operations, focusing on how the U.S. Navy has adapted to asymmetric threats and maintained open sea lanes. Maritime Wars provides a fresh perspective by connecting historical naval conflicts with contemporary maritime challenges, emphasizing the enduring relevance of naval power in geopolitics and national defense.

    himself and discovering?
    • Does one know what a complete stillness means?
    • It is only from a very still mind that a mutation takes place.

is no movement, therefore there is complete stillness.

The gradual collapse of the Roman Empire brought monumental changes to Europe and beyond. The system that once bound both sides of the Mediterranean Basin together was gone, and with it, many of the connections people from Mesopotamia to Spain and from Gaul to Arabia once enjoyed. In its place, a period of transition began - once referred to as the “Dark Ages,” although that term has fallen out of favor with modern scholars - after the Western Roman Empire ended in 476 and a host of new, primarily Germanic people inherited Roman lands, wealth, and ideas in Western Europe. Many of these Germanic tribes established large kingdoms, such as the Vandals in Spain and North Africa, the Franks in Gaul, the Visigoths in Spain, and the Ostrogoths in Italy.
Like the other Germanic tribes, the Lombards originated in Scandinavia before migrating slowly through central Europe, and as the Western Roman Empire collapsed and the Byzantine successor state in Constantinople attempted to reestablish order, the Lombards took advantage of the chaos and planted themselves firmly on Italian soil.
As the Roman Empire in the West collapsed, the Berbers succumbed to the Vandals, a Germanic tribe from Europe, in the 5th century CE. However, the Eastern Roman Empire, centered in Constantinople rather than Rome, underwent something of a renewal, and the whole of the African coast from the Sinai Peninsula to the Straits of Gibraltar returned to Byzantine rule. With that, the Berbers were once again subject to a foreign power, but soon they would exchange their new masters for another, the Arabs, who would bring a new religion, Islam. Through Islam the Berbers would once again come into their own and influence the course of Mediterranean history as their ancient ancestors had done.

The ultimate photographic collection of the most historic trees on the planet.
Uncover remarkable trees from around the world, many of which have borne witness to key moments in history or reached a scale and age that have allowed them to become a part of history themselves.
“[A] rich history … it contains some of the most extraordinary tales of trees through time” — The Sunday Post
First meet 'Methuselah’, a bristlecone pine in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, believed to be 4,900 years old. Learn about trees which have inspired great events, such as the Isaac Newton apple tree in Lincolnshire, where the famous scientist observed an apple falling from a tree (which still stands in the family garden). Other flora has withstood historic events such as in Japan, where the Hibaku jumoku still grows as a survivor tree from the Hiroshima bombing and the 9/11 Survivor Tree in New York City.
Many trees continue to inspire our world today including the long avenue of beech trees in Northern Ireland known as the Dark Hedges which Game of Thrones fans will instantly recognise as the road to Kings Landing, the Robin Hood’s oak in the Sherwood Forest or the J. R. R. Tolkien trees in Avebury, which inspired the Ents in The Lord of the Rings.
Rest a while beside the oldest trunks and witness the enthralling stories nestled within the branches of these gentle giants.
For fans of Gene Stone (Animalkind), Scott Christianson (Fatal Airs), Valentina D'Efilippo (The Brain), Simon Sebag Montefiore (Stalin), and Nigel Farndale (Haw-Haw).
