Synopsis

Robert Greene is best understood as a concentrated statement of the author's enduring concerns: power, self-fashioning, strategy, and the hidden motives that govern social life. Written in Greene's characteristically aphoristic, example-driven prose, the book belongs to a lineage that reaches from classical moral history and Renaissance "mirrors for princes" to modern psychological analysis. Its style is lucid, severe, and deliberately unsentimental, inviting readers to interpret human behavior as a field of patterns, incentives, and theatrical performances. Greene, the American author best known for works such as The 48 Laws of Power, The Art of Seduction, and Mastery, has long drawn upon biography, military history, philosophy, and literature to examine ambition and influence. His background in classical studies and his years of varied employment before literary success helped shape his interest in the practical intelligence required to navigate institutions, rivalries, and personal reinvention. This book is recommended for readers interested in strategic thought, intellectual history, and the darker textures of human conduct. It will especially appeal to those who value historically informed reflection over easy consolation.

The true life story of one of early twentieth century's baseball legends—a Most Valuable Player and Hall of Famer who was as difficult as he was talented.A relentless competitor, Rogers Hornsby—arguably the finest right-handed hitter in baseball's history—was supremely successful on the baseball field but, in many ways, a failure off it.In this biography, Charles Alexander turns his skilled eye to this complex individual, weaving the stories of his personal and professional life with a lively history of the sport.“Destined to occupy prominent shelf space in baseball's essential library.” —The Sporting News“The author delves into Hornsby's professional and personal life: his relationship with managers Miller Huggins, Branch Rickey and John McGraw; his scandalous affair and subsequent 20-year marriage to a 'flapper'; his personal prohibition on drinking and smoking; his reluctance to watch movies because they might impinge on his eyesight; and his obsession with horse racing-although he never learned to read a racing form. Alexander reviews Hornsby's successful tenure as player-manager of the Cardinals; his subsequent stints with the Giants, Braves, Cubs and Browns; and his career as manager and coach.” —Publishers Weekly

Katherine O'Flaherty was born on the 8th February 1850 in St Louis, Missouri to parents of French and Irish descent.
At age 5, she was sent to the Sacred Heart Academy and, apart from a 2 year period at home when her father died, remained there until graduating in 1868. Whilst there she began writing and became an avid reader of almost anything that crossed her path.
Kate married Oscar Chopin in 1870 and the couple moved to New Orleans, and later to the rural setting of Cloutierville, Louisiana to raise their 6 children.
In 1882 her husband died leaving her in a deep trench of debt. Despite her best efforts to turn the businesses around they were sold, and she moved the family back to St Louis and the financial help of her mother. Sadly, her mother died within the year. Kate, now struggling with depression, pushed herself to write and gained a local reputation as a writer of short stories that captured the local color and vibrancy of her surroundings.
By the early 1890’s her short stories were published nationally. With this widespread audience also came negative reviews, controversy, and cries of immorality as themes such as interracial relationships, the rights of women and other burning issues of the day were written about.
Despite the criticism, which unnerved her, she continued to write though in the main her works, around 100 short stories and two novels, were not attributed with any literary worth.
Kate Chopin died from a brain haemorrhage in St Louis Missouri on the 22nd of August 1904. She was 54.
For much of the 20th Century her work was forgotten and out of print. It was only in early 1970’s, with the rise of feminism and the call for a more just society that she was given the status her works had long described and shone a literary light at. She is now safely revered as one of America’s great authors.
