Synopsis

Ever since the Great Spirit of Darkness surrendered, world peace has finally become a reality. But the antics of Neon—Dustour’s prince and royal pain in the butt—are keeping Slowe from his happily ever after with Charlotte! What awaits Slowe is a love story with many twists and turns, one not unlike his own—a romance between a prince and his retainer.

Feeling an odd sense of kinship, Slowe keeps tabs on the couple until an envoy from the north crashes the party with unreasonable challenges of his own. To realize their forbidden love, the couple must overcome these daunting tasks.

But Slowe and Neon must be wary, for the night of the arisen is creeping up on them. Blood waltzes in the air like an elegant dance, and Slowe can only hope that the flowers of love will come into full bloom, standing tall and strong against all adversity.

"The Street" is a short story by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft, written in late 1919 and first published in the December 1920 issue of the Wolverine amateur journal. The story traces the history of the titular street in a New England city, presumably Boston, from its first beginnings as "but a path" in colonial times to a quasi-supernatural occurrence in the years immediately following World War I. As the city grows up around the street, it is planted with many trees and built along with "simple, beautiful houses of brick and wood", each with a rose garden. As the Industrial Revolution runs its course, the area degenerates into a run-down and polluted slum, with all of the street's old houses falling into disrepair. After World War I and the October Revolution, the area becomes home to a community of Russian immigrants. Among the new residents is the leadership of a "vast band of terrorists," who are plotting the destruction of the United States on Independence Day. When the day arrives, the terrorists gather to do the deed, but before they can get started, all the houses in the street collapse concurrently on top of each other, killing them all. Observers at the scene testify that immediately after the collapse, they experienced visions of the trees and rose gardens that had once been in the street.

LONGLISTED FOR THE QUEEN SOFÍA SPANISH INSTITUTE TRANSLATION PRIZE A masterful novel exploring womanhood, class, and tradition in 1950s Colombia From her home in Paris, Lina recalls the story of three women whose lives unfold in the conservative city of Barranquilla in Colombia. Amid parties at the Country Club and strolls along the promenade in Puerto Colombia unfurls a story of sensuality suppressed by violence; a narrative of oppression in which Dora, Catalina, and Beatriz are victims of a patriarchy that is woven into the social fabric. In Lina’s obsessive account of the past, this masterful novel transforms personal anecdotes into a profound panorama of Colombian society towards the end of the 1950s. From private memories to historical reality, the structure of this book is full of precision, poetry, and exile’s insight. Standing above and apart from her contemporaries of the Latin American literary boom, Marvel Moreno narrates a reality that describes the private lives of the people of Barranquilla while offering a compelling perspective on the human condition. “One of the hundred most influential women in the history of Colombia.”—Cromos magazine
