Beschreibung

An alien beacon from Mars lies buried deep within the ground and wreaks havoc with the minds of the people of a tiny town. The world of cosmic horror in the book is based on a post-industrial wasteland where the quarry stands out as a scary focal point.

The main characters are smothered in rich backstories—a former NASA scientist’s alcoholism because she “lost” the Rover, a teenager running away from her Dad’s beatings, and the town’s lone police officer not getting over his deceased wife. The the alien threat becomes personal. The beacon’s mental manipulation screams  alien paranoia. It even creates a violent cult to serve as enforcers. It’s goal and plan are simple: control planet Earth by controlling the human mind.

Edith's ancient home is full of secrets . . . and dragons are the least of them.

As the new dragon keeper in the hidden valley of Ormdale, Edith expects her first dragon mating season to involve venomous bites and amorous wyverns.

She doesn't expect to find herself growing closer to an inconveniently appealing suitor next door, or to stumble upon a dragon poacher lurking in the outbuildings, or to uncover a family scandal in the Abbey.

Fortunately, Edith has a mentor to help her sort things out, the spellbinding Helena Drake of Drake Hall. Or does Helena harbor secrets of her own?

For Edith, the dragons were always going to be the easy part.

Drake Hall, Book 2 of The Secrets of Ormdale, takes Edith deeper into the cozy gothic world of Yorkshire dragons and the mysterious families who guard them.

The Hanging Stranger - Ed had always been a practical man, when he saw something was wrong he tried to correct it. Then one day he saw it hanging in the town square. From the lamppost something was hanging. A shapeless dark bundle, swinging a little with the wind. Like a dummy of some sort. Loyce rolled down his window and peered out. What the hell was it? A display of some kind? Sometimes the Chamber of Commerce put up displays in the square.
The Gun - Nothing moved or stirred. Everything was silent, dead. Only the gun showed signs of life ... and the trespassers had wrecked that for all time. The return journey to pick up the treasure would be a cinch ... they smiled.
Beyond The Door - Larry Thomas bought a cuckoo clock for his wife—without knowing the price he would have to pay. That night at the dinner table he brought it out and set it down beside her plate. Doris stared at it, her hand to her mouth. "My God, what is it?" She looked up at him, bright-eyed.
Beyond Lies The Wub - The slovenly wub might well have said: Many men talk like philosophers and live like fools. They had almost finished with the loading. Outside stood the Optus, his arms folded, his face sunk in gloom. Captain Franco walked leisurely down the gangplank, grinning.
The Eyes Have It - A little whimsy, now and then, makes for good balance. Theoretically, you could find this type of humor anywhere. But only a topflight science-fictionist, we thought, could have written this story, in just this way…
