Synopsis

The Rugby World Cup is contested every four years between the top international teams. The tournament was first held in 1987, when the tournament was co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. The winners are awarded the Webb Ellis Cup, named after William Webb Ellis, the Rugby School pupil who, according to a popular legend, invented rugby by picking up the ball during a football game. Four countries have won the trophy; New Zealand three times, Australia and South Africa each twice, and England once. New Zealand are the current champions, having defeated Australia in the final of the 2015 tournament in England. Japan will host the 2019 Rugby World Cup and France will host in 2023. This book is a collector’s edition featuring images and details from every World Cup since 1975: a must for every Rugby fan.

    Here is a guide to the most revolutionary development in British angling for many years: fly-fishing for trout and grayling in the very centre of towns and cities throughout the United Kingdom.

    From Sheffield to South London, from Merthyr Tydfil to Edinburgh, this is the cutting edge of 21st century fishing. Nothing is more surreal yet exhilarating than casting a fly for iconic clean-water species in the historic surroundings of our most damaged riverscapes – centres of post-industrial decay, but now also of rediscovery and regeneration.

    * fishing-focused profiles of 50 selected streams

    * interviews with local conservationists dedicated to restoring the urban rivers

    * local flies and emerging traditions, and

    * details of how to get involved and support this restoration work.
    This book guides readers towards relaxing, good-value fishing on their own doorsteps as a viable alternative to more costly (and carbon-intensive) destination angling: a positive lifestyle choice in challenging moral and economic times.

    No one author or publisher has yet attempted to bring this emerging trend of urban flyfishing into a single, epoch-making volume.

    The Memory Man – a sobriquet earned for his uncanny ability to recall virtually any sporting trivia – not only gives us his entertaining and forensic insight into which sporting moments he believes can be justifiably described as in a Different Class, but sports fans will also be thrilled to finally discover who Jimmy Magee really thinks is the best of the best – or the most over-rated for that matter – in soccer, GAA, rugby, boxing, golf, athletics and many other sports.
    The maestro of memories has anecdotes about the hundreds of iconic sport heroes he has had the privilege of meeting during his travels. The pages of Different Class are bursting with legendary figures: Muhammad Ali, Pelé, Eddie Merckx, Maradona and Matt Busby.
    Fans of Irish sport won't be disappointed either, with Jimmy Magee casting a critical eye over the likes of George Best, Katie Taylor, Jack Charlton, Seán Kelly, Brian O'Driscoll, Rory McIlroy, Stephen Roche, Roy Keane, Sonia O'Sullivan, and virtually anyone who's been anybody in the GAA.
    With such a stellar cast, this book is definitely in a Different Class.

    "The fight game in the raw great contests and some really hard men. What a life!" Roy Shaw
    Prize-fighting was one of the greatest sporting attractions in the 18th and 19th centuries. Prize-fights attracted thousands of spectators from all walks of life and, nothwithstanding its illegality, was patronised by royalty and the aristocracy. The area outside London around Barnet, Whetstone, Finchley and up into Hertfordshire was one on the most popular for staging fights. Featured in Up to Scratch are many of the great champions - Tom Johnson, Daniel Mendoza, Jem Belcher, Tom Sayers and Jem Mace - as well as many forgotten but no less colourful fistic heroes.
    Up To Scratch powerfully evokes an age when pugilism was a barbaric, corrupt and yet primarily noble activity.

    As a young man with a compelling interest in the great outdoors and the natural world Allister ('Ashie') Brebner spent his precious weekends in the 1950s and early '60s as a pioneer of the emerging Scottish bothying and mountaineering scene, and was one of the builders of the famed Secret Howff on Bheinn a' Bhuird in the Cairngorms. At the start of the 1960s he threw in his steady, well-paid job as a factory worker and, with another companion who did the same, started as a pioneer of mountain and nature guiding in the Scottish Highlands. Here is the unique story of a working man whose odyssey took him from the tenements and factory work of Aberdeen to the mountains and islands of the Highlands, their people and their wildlife.
