Synopsis

Spending Time with an Angel is a diary in which Paul Lazor documents all stages of his wife, Julie, during her battle against leukaemia. We can clearly see how love, sorrow, and resiliency play an integral role in their lives throughout the book. It portrays a life filled with routine activities and common aspirations, as well as the warmth and humour in the family and the couple’s exchanges that highlight their close friendship from the outset. As symptoms emerged, his wife’s gradual decline was accompanied by struggles with worry and confusion. As the course of therapy goes on, the diary entries get increasingly melancholy, and along with Julie’s hardships, the emotional agony is ever-present.This story depicts the emotional ups and downs of chronic disease through contrasting moments of hope and despair.Readers will learn more about the intricacies of love during trying times by reading this diary. The book reflects a difficult journey, portraying a heartbreaking situation through the eyes of a man remembering his wife.Paul Lazor, born Pawlo Lazor in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, in 1955, is the son of refugees who came from Eastern Europe after the end of the Second World War. I transferred to a grammar school at the age of 16 and eventually to the University of Birmingham, where I studied Science. I graduated in 1976 and embarked upon a career in the Sale of scientific instruments to Industry. I travelled to Eastern Europe and Russia, encountering the Secret Police and Donald Maclean, the infamous spy. After my first marriage came to a tragic end, I met Julie in 1990, who became my wife and Angel in the story. In 2001, Julie was diagnosed with leukaemia, and she passed away in 2005. In 2014, after a period of calm and tranquillity in my life, I decided to start a new life in Spain. After retiring in 2022 and learning to speak Spanish to a reasonable standard, I am now teaching Spanish as an enjoyable hobby to expats from England.

Stolen kisses and secret reunions lead to a passion that civil war cannot sever in this glorious historical romance from the bestselling author of Caress.   Beautiful, proud Audra Brennan feels like a stranger in a foreign land when she comes north from Louisiana to study music. But when she savors her first forbidden taste of desire in the arms of handsome lawyer Lee Jeffreys, his caresses spark a flame within her that burns away the differences between rebel and Yankee, all objections silenced by the fierce beating of two wild hearts falling impetuously, impossibly in love.   Suddenly cannon fire shatters the country. Principled, impassioned, and committed to a nation united, Lee answers the call to fight against the Confederacy, while Audra hurries home to a plantation shadowed by the darkening cloud of war. But in the most terrible of circumstances, can either afford to surrender their heart?   “Power, passion, tragedy and triumph are Rosanne Bittner’s hallmarks. Again and again, she brings readers to tears.” —RT Book Reviews

The narrator of Hogg is a Huck Finn–like youngster caught in society’s most sinister seams—but unlike Huck, he passes no moral judgments on the violence he takes part in . . .Hogg is the story of a man—a depraved trucker named Franklin Hargus, whom the people he works for call Hogg—and of the nameless boy who tells the story of three days of unspeakable sexual violence and devastation, which, together, they initiate in a small seaside American city in the middle of the last century. Hogg is a towering brute who makes his living as a rapist for hire. By the end of a series of vicious attacks, kidnappings, and mass murders, the reader will wonder who is more corrupt: the man or the boy.   Samuel R. Delany completed his first draft of Hogg within a day, if not within hours, of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City and revised it over the next four years, though it was not released until 1995.
