Beschreibung

In this captivating exploration of profanity, we embark on a journey through the ages, tracing the evolution of swear words from their humble beginnings in ancient civilizations to their ubiquitous presence in modern-day discourse. We delve into the psychological and sociological factors that drive our use of profanity, shedding light on the intricate interplay between language, culture, and power.

Profanity, often regarded as the antithesis of polite speech, has long been a subject of fascination and debate. It challenges societal norms, pushing the boundaries of acceptable language and provoking strong reactions from both proponents and detractors. We examine the legal and ethical quandaries surrounding profanity, exploring the delicate balance between freedom of expression and the need to maintain social order.

Furthermore, we explore the multifaceted relationship between profanity and identity. Swear words can serve as powerful tools for self-expression, group bonding, and social differentiation. They can reflect our innermost emotions, our cultural heritage, and our place in society. We examine how profanity shapes and is shaped by individual and collective identities, shedding light on the complex interplay between language and the human experience.

In the digital age, profanity has found new avenues for expression and dissemination. Social media platforms and online forums have become virtual battlegrounds where linguistic norms are constantly challenged and redefined. We investigate the impact of the internet on profanity, exploring how it has both amplified and transformed the ways in which we use and perceive swear words.

Throughout this exploration, we encounter a diverse cast of characters—from ancient philosophers and religious leaders to contemporary comedians and pop culture icons—who have grappled with the power and significance of profanity. Their insights and experiences illuminate the multifaceted nature of this linguistic phenomenon, challenging our assumptions and inviting us to reconsider our own attitudes towards profanity.

As we delve into the depths of profanity, we gain a deeper understanding of its role in human communication and its profound impact on society. This book is an invitation to explore the complexities of profanity, to appreciate its nuances, and to engage in thoughtful discussions about its place in our world.

With our earliest utterances, we announce ourselves—and are recognized—as persons ready for social life. With our final ones, we mark where others must release us to death's embrace. In Bye Bye I Love You, linguist and author Michael Erard explores these phenomena, commonly called "first words" and "last words," uncovering their cultural, historical, and biological entanglements and honoring their deep private significance. Erard draws from personal, historical, and anthropological sources to provide a sense of the breadth of beliefs and practices about these phenomena across eras, religions, and cultures around the world.

What do babies' first words have in common? How do people really communicate at the end of life? In the first half of the book, Erard tells the story of first words in human development and evolution, and how the attention to children's early language—a modern phenomenon—arose. In the second half, he provides a groundbreaking overview of language at the end of life and the cultural conventions that surround it. Throughout he reveals the many parallels and asymmetries between first and last words and asks whether we might be able to use a linguistic understanding of end of life to discover what we truly want.

While Frank O'Connor was known primarily as one of Ireland's finest short-story writers, he was also an accomplished translator. In the long line of Irish writers given to translating poems in Irish into poems written in English – a tradition stretching back at least as far as Jonathan Swift – he stands out above all the rest.
Between the mid-1920s and the mid-1960s, O'Connor published 121 translations that give voice to the full range of this centuries-old tradition. Collected here in full for the first time, O'Connor's work shows an uncanny aptitude for carrying over into English verse many of the riches to be found in the originals – the ancient voice of the Hag of Beare lamenting her decline into old age; the voices of the early monks describing the Irish landscape, Irish weather, their religious faith, and, in at least one instance, their cat; the voice of Hugh O'Rourke's wife torn between loyalty to her husband and a rising desire for her seducer. All these voices haunted O'Connor throughout his career, whatever else he was doing. The collection includes the Irish-language sources for all 121 translations along with literal translations, enabling the reader to see what O'Connor started from.
O'Connor's translations sprang from a compulsive desire to breathe life into Ireland's past, to 'look back to look forward,' as he once put it; for him the Irish-language tradition was not for scholars and archives alone, but formed a living body of work vitally relevant to an Ireland that seemed puzzlingly indifferent to it.
Thanks to O'Connor's profound love of his country's language and its rich, literary subsoil – 'a literature of which no Irishman need feel ashamed', he once said – these voices from Ireland's past can still be heard. Strikingly modern in tone, they conjoin flesh and spirit, the sacred and the secular, in a way that speaks to humankind.
