An autistic feminist author looks at women's history, in search of her 'weird sisters.'

It seemed to me that many of the moments when my autism had caused problems, or at least marked me out as different, were those moments when I had come up against some unspoken law about how a girl or a woman should be, and failed to meet it.

An autism diagnosis in midlife enabled Joanne Limburg to finally make sense of why her emotional expression, social discomfort and presentation had always marked her as an outsider.

Eager to discover other women who had been misunderstood in their time, she writes a series of wide-ranging letters to four 'weird sisters' from history, addressing topics including autistic parenting, social isolation, feminism, the movement for disability rights and the appalling punishments that have been meted out over centuries to those deemed to fall short of the norm.

This heartfelt, deeply compassionate and wholly original work humanizes women who have so often been dismissed for their differences, and will be celebrated by 'weird sisters' everywhere.

Award-winning author Francine Klagsbrun reveals the complex life and work of Henrietta Szold, founder of Hadassah and a Zionist trailblazer

Henrietta Szold (1860–1945) is renowned as the founder of Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, which quickly became one of the most successful of all Zionist groups. In her work with Hadassah, Szold used a combined ethical and pragmatic approach aimed at improving the lives of both Jews and Arabs. She later moved to Mandate Palestine to help shape education, health, and social services there. The pinnacle of her career came in her seventies, when she took on the task of directing the Youth Aliyah program, which rescued thousands of young people from the Nazis and resettled them in Palestine.

Using Szold's copious letters, diaries, and essays, along with other archival documents, Francine Klagsbrun traces Szold's life and legacy with an eye to uncovering the person behind the Zionist icon. She reveals Szold as a complex human being who had to cope with controversy and criticism, a workaholic with an outsized sense of duty, and an idealist who fought for her beliefs even as she questioned her own abilities. With deep insight, Klagsbrun introduces listeners to this extraordinary woman, whose impact on women's lives as well as on education and health systems still resonates.

    Foreword by Ian Gilbert.
At a time of unprecedented challenges in relation not only to the climate crisis but also to children's and adolescents' mental health, connecting to nature offers an accessible and desirable way forward for today's learners - especially those living in urban surroundings.
Bringing together evidence from psychology, environmental science and education, Alexia aims to support teachers as they provide meaningful experiences rooted in learning about and through nature. The book can be used in two ways: to inspire individual sessions in nature, or to support teachers in building a cohesive outdoor-learning curriculum throughout the school.
Featuring practical advice, case studies and discussion of original theory, the book aims to inspire, motivate and stimulate educators to engage with alternative approaches to teaching in the outdoors and with nature in mind - and in such a way that promotes students' learning and fosters a long-lasting relationship with nature.
Independent Thinking on Nature-Based Learningshares case studies and examples of good practice from a variety of settings - ranging from kindergarten to secondary. Detailing the physical and psychological benefits of being outdoors, the book suggests ways to help build young people's connection with nature and support their autonomy in naturalspaces. Alexia offersideas on how to weave nature and the outdoors into the very fabric of the curriculum - for example, in relation to art, literature and technology.
Suitable for teachers and outdoor-learning leaders in early years through to secondary schools.

Gordon Braxton was in his second year of college before anybody bothered to speak to him about sexual violence, despite the fact that he already knew friends and family members that had survived sexual assault. Unfortunately, this is a
common experience as many young men and boys, especially Black boys, do not have an opportunity to discuss their views on sexual violence and what role they might play in preventing it. Empowering Black Boys to Challenge Rape Culture
supports the training of a rising generation by providing commentary from an experienced educator, an overview of existing research and preventative techniques, and insight into young men’s perspectives on violence. The result is a
powerful new perspective on violence prevention—the first to focus on Black boys and to be written by a Black male author.

The most critical lesson that boys need to learn is that they have an essential role to play in preventing sexual violence. So many of them accept this violence as beyond their control when they could be valuable agents of change. More and
more parents and mentors of boys are coming to address sexual violence as a cultural problem rather than the activities of isolated social deviants. Empowering Black Boys to Challenge Rape Culture adds an important voice to our discussions
about sexual violence education and prevention, showing that a rising generation of boys will play a vital part in realizing a non-violent future.

    Dark Psychology - Influencing...

Deception, as defined by the dictionary, involves intentionally leading someone to believe something that is untrue. This act is deeply ingrained in human nature, allowing anyone to practice it. Deception can engage either the mind or emotions, leveraging our desire for knowledge or information to manipulate us. When deception targets the mind, it often comes in the form of false or distorted information presented as "knowledge."

When aimed at the body, deception involves persuading someone to undertake actions that have concealed negative consequences. However, the gravest form of deception affects the human spirit. This form is particularly serious because it can influence one’s ultimate fate, even though many people trivialize spiritual matters due to deceptive beliefs.
Self-deception occurs when we deceive ourselves into accepting false claims about ourselves as true. This process involves convincing ourselves of a truth that is not actually true, effectively hiding our self-awareness of the deception. Self-deception is a strategic way of maintaining belief in the stories we tell ourselves. If successful, it reduces the likelihood of revealing our true nature, much like overconfidence and optimism. Though similar to these biases, self-deception has its own set of benefits and drawbacks.

An inflated sense of self-belief can enhance our overall well-being by helping us cope with stress, increasing our persistence in challenging tasks, and encouraging us to seek new experiences. However, when deceit pervades our lives and the lives of those around us, it undermines trust and complicates our existence. While optimism about a bright future is appealing, self-deception can lead to significant disappointments when reality confronts us.
