The honorific Mahātmā (from Sanskrit, meaning great-souled, or venerable), first applied to him in South Africa in 1914, is used worldwide. The following is a June 4th 1947 speech Gandhi gave, in Hindi, after a meeting with British Viceroy Louis Mountbatten.
