Beschreibung

The "OSCAR WILDE Ultimate Collection: 250+ Titles in One Edition" is a monumental anthology that encapsulates the wit, aestheticism, and profound philosophical inquiry characterizing Wilde's oeuvre. This compendium offers not only his famed plays, such as "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "An Ideal Husband," but also his essays, poetry, and short stories, highlighting the delicate interplay between beauty and morality in late 19th-century literature. The collection is meticulously organized to guide readers through Wilde's multifaceted exploration of societal norms, individuality, and the pursuit of artistic expression, all rendered in his signature flamboyant prose and sharp, satirical humor. Oscar Wilde (1854'Äì1900) stands as one of literature's most striking figures, a dandy and a champion of the aesthetic movement whose own life echoed the complexities of his works. Raised in Dublin, he was educated at Trinity College and Oxford, where he honed his artistic sensibilities and developed a keen awareness of the social mores that would later inform his writing. Wilde'Äôs trials and tribulations, ultimately leading to his imprisonment, provide a profound backdrop that enriches the understanding of his themes surrounding love, identity, and societal constraints. This ultimate collection is a treasure trove for both new and seasoned readers of Wilde, offering an unparalleled opportunity to immerse oneself in the breadth of his contributions to literature and culture. Readers will find themselves enchanted by his prose, challenged by his ideas, and inspired by his relentless pursuit of truth and beauty.

This is where my journey begins, Watts, California. My childhood was shaped by my close-knit extended family, and traumatic experiences that no young person should have to endure. This early phase of my life is entitled Numb due to the lack of emotional feeling growing up the way that I did created in me from my early days.

Cycling? It's one of my life's constants, it feeds my need for beauty, for delight and for aimless exploring . . . I hope to continue pedalling, nice and slowly, for the rest of my life, with the same curiosity that ignited my childhood.

Twelve writers consider the joys and consolations of cycling, whether in a city late at night or along country lanes on a summer's day. Yara Rodrigues Fowler and Xani Byrne write movingly on coming to terms with loss through tandem biking; Jon McGregor takes part in the overnight Dunwich Dynamo. Annie Lord sings the praises of cycling home on Lime bikes from parties, while the late Dervla Murphy regales us with stories of a cycle through Europe.

Freewheeling is a celebration of life on two wheels, and how bikes can become an extension of ourselves, a type of armour, and a route to liberation.

An eye-opening account from inside an ultra-secret Customs unit

Mark Perlstrom is no stranger to money laundering, drug smuggling and crooked firms.

In the late 1980s he started working for HM Customs and was quickly thrown in the deep end, joining Operation C-Chase, an undercover investigation that penetrated Pablo Escobar's mighty Medellin cartel, brought down the corrupt BCCI bank and stopped London's gangs from moving their ill-gotten gains around the capital.

As part of the Uniforms - the new, secret, anti-money-laundering squad - high-speed car chases, bugging homes and spying on targets was day-to-day business.

Told by a true insider and revealing never-before-told-secrets of the industry, India Uniform Nine lays bare the intense rivalry between crime-fighting organisations and how that leads to corruption, chaos and some scarcely believable antics in the covert world. And how Mark's own operation was nearly scuppered by a US Customs bungle.

One overlooked figure in the Punic Wars is Hamilcar Barca, who is now best remembered for being Hannibal’s father. However, before Hannibal marched out of Spain, it was Hamilcar who had positioned forces there, and he was already a significant historical figure in his own right. Indeed, had it not been for his death, his legacy likely would have been more important than that of his illustrious son, who is now remembered as one of history’s greatest generals.
In the history of war, only a select few men always make the list of greatest generals. Napoleon. Caesar. Alexander. They are always joined by Hannibal, who has the distinction of being the only man who nearly brought Rome to its knees before its decline almost 700 years later. Rome never suffered a more horrifying defeat in its history than at Cannae, and indeed, Hannibal nearly rewrote the course of Western history during the Second Punic War. Even today there remains great debate on just how he accomplished his masterful invasion of Italy across the Alps. Since his army included war elephants, historians still argue over exactly where and how he crossed over 2,000 years after he managed that incredible feat.
Although the Romans gained the upper hand in the wake of the First Punic War, Hannibal brought the Romans to their knees for over a decade during the Second Punic War. While military historians are still amazed that he was able to maintain his army in Italy near Rome for nearly 15 years, scholars are still puzzled over some of his decisions, including why he never attempted to march on Rome in the first place. Hannibal will always be listed among history’s greatest generals, and his military campaign in Italy during the Second Punic War will always be studied, but part of the aura and mystique surrounding the Carthaginian legend is that there is still a lot of mystery.
