Synopsis

In "Children in Prison and Other Cruelties of Prison Life," Oscar Wilde offers a searing critique of the penal system, particularly focusing on the harsh realities faced by youthful offenders. Through a blend of poignant prose and fervent advocacy, Wilde illuminates the suffering ingrained in incarceration, employing a literary style characterized by vivid imagery and emotional resonance. Written during a time when Victorian societal norms often turned a blind eye to the plight of the marginalized, this text serves as both an exposé and a plea for reform, making it a significant work in the canon of social justice literature. Oscar Wilde, once hailed as one of the leading figures of the Aesthetic Movement, faced his own tribulations after being imprisoned for his sexuality. His experiences within the very confines he critiques profoundly impacted his worldview, instilling in him a profound empathy for the disenfranchised. This context not only informs his passionate rhetoric but also reveals the complexity of his insights into suffering and humanity. This compelling book is essential reading for anyone interested in social reform, literary history, or the intersections of art and advocacy. Wilde's arguments resonate with contemporary discussions about prison reform, making this text a timeless reminder of the need for compassion and justice.

The Swamp has been around for over 150 years, and six major presidents have tried to drain it with varying degrees of success.

Donald Trump promised to “Drain the Swamp,” by which he originally meant lobbyists. When he got in, he found an entirely different Swamp—a Deep State that had grown, layer upon layer, within the government. But he wasn’t the first to encounter entrenched Swamp opposition. Abraham Lincoln had to battle the
“Slave Power Conspiracy”; Grover Cleveland was the most successful of three presidents to fight the spoils Swamp. Theodore Roosevelt found a new iteration of the Swamp awaiting him: Trusts. After World War II, John F. Kennedy discovered that he had little control over the Central Intelligence Agency, and even found he
needed the CIA for his own purposes. Despite promising to shrink the bureaucracy Swamp, Ronald Reagan found himself helpless to even make a dent in it. And Trump soon learned that the Deep State could ensure no one ever brought any of its own to justice. Dragonslayers explains why these Swamps exist, and why they were—and remain—so hard to defeat.

Francis Grierson's, The Valley of Shadows, is truly a lost American classic. Written at the dawn of the twentieth century, the author has remarkably captured his adventures and observations as a child growing up on the prairies of Illinois in the years leading up the Civil War, in a region that was neither North nor South; neither for slavery nor against it; and how their small family farm became an unscheduled stop on the Underground Railroad.Written in an authentic vernacular of the time, and populated by larger than life characters, Grierson has woven a tale of excitement and mystery, set in a second Garden of Eden of wildlife and nature. The prose and dialogue is like Shakespeare of the prairie. It reads like a cross between Tom Sawyer and Uncle Tom's Cabin, and stands out among all of the other books written about that era. What people are saying:“It has a quality not to be found in any other writing about the Civil War;""Its prose is alive, strong, subtle, of warm color, almost overpowering;""No one can read it, without finding new enlightenment about our past.”

To the ancient Egyptians, the gods and goddesses were all around them and could be seen daily in nature. Nearly every animal found in ancient Egypt, both domestic and wild, were associated with a god or goddess, which can be seen in Egyptian art where deities are often depicted with human bodies and animal heads. Or sometimes the deities are portrayed as complete animals. Since deities were associated with certain animals, all animals of a specific species were given divine and protected status. The reverence that ancient Egyptians had for certain animals evolved during the long duration of Pharaonic history until by the Late Period animals of specific species were mummified by the thousands as offerings for their associated deities.
Ancient Greece and its mythology has fascinated people for thousands of years, and few elements have intrigued people quite like the Eleusinian Mysteries, which the Greeks believed transformed the initiates and gave them knowledge that eased both the living of life on earth and allayed fears of death, allowing an acceptance of their ultimate fate. The influence of the Eleusinian Mysteries was also far reaching; for example, the Telesterion is reminiscent of the labyrinthine, symbolic structures that can be found all over pre-historic Europe, ranging from those in Ireland to Malta and Crete to the Shetlands. The larger precinct of Eleusis, combining as it did caves, terraces and buildings carved into the rock again, all echo that ancient past.
The cult of Mithras was not a creation of the Romans, although they would eventually add their own rituals and mysteries to the ancient religion. In fact, the Mithraic religion was an Indo-Persian creation, a theology which managed to travel from India and back into the Hellenic and Roman world by way of Alexander the Great’s conquest of the Persian Empire. Eventually, the cult of Mithras would spread across the ancient world.
