Synopsis

In Niccolò Machiavelli's seminal works, *The Prince* and *The Art of War*, the author intricately examines the mechanics of power and governance, delivering profound insights into the nature of political leadership and military strategy during the Italian Renaissance. Written in a direct and pragmatic style, these texts reflect a stark realism, eschewing moralistic narratives in favor of candid advice for rulers and military leaders. The intertwining of warfare and politics is explored through Machiavelli's analytical lens, making these treatises foundational to modern political theory and military thought. Machiavelli, a diplomat and political theorist from Florence, was profoundly influenced by the tumultuous political landscape of his time, characterized by petty rivalries, shifting allegiances, and the rise and fall of city-states. His personal experiences, including his imprisonment and exile, shaped his understanding of power dynamics, making him a keen observer of human behavior and government. As a product of the Italian Renaissance, Machiavelli sought to revive classical ideas while confronting the realities of contemporary politics. *The Prince* and *The Art of War* are essential readings for anyone interested in political philosophy, history, or military strategy. Machiavelli's work remains relevant, offering critical reflections that provoke thought about authoritative governance, ethics in leadership, and the complexities of war, making this a compelling exploration for scholars and general readers alike.

Since it was first proposed in the US House of Representatives, the Green New Deal has been hotly debated. The intent was not simply to fight climate change or address a specific environmental concern, but rather to tackle how climate change and other environmental challenges affect the economy, the vulnerable, and social justice—and vice versa.

In Science for a Green New Deal, Eric Davidson dissects this legislative resolution. He also shows how green new deal thinking offers a framework for a convergence of the natural sciences, social science, economics, and community engagement to develop holistic policy solutions to the most pressing issues of our day. Davidson weaves the case for linkages among multiple global crises, including a pandemic that has reversed progress on fighting poverty and hunger, an acceleration of climate change, and a renewed awareness of profound social injustices highlighted by the Black Lives Matter movement.

Illustrating these points with his personal life experiences as a child growing up in Montana and as a famed researcher leading a large scientific society, Davidson relates these complex challenges to our everyday lives and decision-making. Science for a Green New Deal is a realistic and optimistic look at how we can attain a more sustainable, prosperous, and just future.

Robert Graves’ Greek Epics includes the compelling war story, The Anger of Achilles, and the compelling world of Greek mythology in Hercules, My Shipmate.
The Anger of Achilles is a novelized interpretation of Homer’s Iliad, told by noted classicist and historical novelist Robert Graves. The war between the Greeks and the Trojans has reached a fever pitch. Offended by Agamemnon, the great Greek warrior Achilles is in his tent, refusing to fight. But then Trojan prince Hector slaughters Patroclus, Achilles’ close friend. Willing or not, Achilles must take revenge for his friend’s death, even if it will result in his own.

In this innovative take on the classic tale, Achilles comes to life in all his vivid rage, bravery, passion, and lust for battle. Combining his advanced expertise in ancient Greek warfare and culture with a talent for telling a compelling story, Robert Graves is the ideal translator to bring this ancient epic of war to a modern audience.

Hercules, My Shipmate is an inventive reimagining of the story of Jason and the Argonauts, this novel by renowned poet and classicist Robert Graves brings heroic figures of Hellenistic myth to life. Graves’ Jason is belligerent, energetic, and full of life, and the society Graves builds for him is outlandish and deeply invested in ancient cults.

Against this primitive, religious backdrop, the charismatic Jason assembles a crew and sets out to retrieve the sacred gold-trimmed fleece that is sacred to Zeus, and that has been stolen by worshippers of the Triple Goddess. Accompanying him is Hercules, a brave warrior known more for his brawn, and his astonishingly good luck, than his brains. Robert Graves builds a compelling world that sets Hellenistic magic and mystery in a surprisingly gritty, realistic setting, a fascinating read for fans of Greek mythology.

The United Nations is one of the most famous bodies in the world, and its predecessor, the League of Nations, might be equally notorious. In fact, President Woodrow Wilson’s pet project was controversial from nearly the minute it was conceived. Wilson mostly found himself shut out, but Britain and France did not want American contributions to the war to go totally unappreciated, if only out of fear that the U.S. might turn towards improving their relations with Germany in response. Thus, to appease Wilson and the Americans, France and Britain consented to the creation of a League of Nations. However, even though his participation in the crafting of the Treaty of Versailles earned him a Nobel Prize that year, Wilson soon learned to his consternation that diplomacy with Congress would go no better than his diplomacy with European leaders. The only major provision that Wilson achieved in Europe, the League of Nations, was the most controversial in the United States.
While it would attempt to resolve some territorial disputes, it simply proved too weak to prevent international aggression, primarily among the Axis Powers in the buildup to World War II. Thus, the League’s greatest legacy ended up being its dismal failure to prevent World War II and ensure that World War I had truly been the “war to end all wars,” as originally intended.
Although the League of Nations was short-lived and clearly failed in its primary mission, it did essentially spawn the United Nations at the end of World War II, and many of the UN’s structures and organizations came straight from its predecessor, with the concepts of an International Court and a General Assembly coming straight from the League. More importantly, the failures of the League ensured that the UN was given stronger authority and enforcement mechanisms, most notably through the latter’s Security Council, and the UN has survived the last 80 years.
