Synopsis

Welcome to Black Cat Weekly #46.

This is one of our longest issues to date, thanks to no less than 3 novels! Not only is there a Nick Carter mystery novel, but we also have a classic time-travel novel from Edmond Hamilton, plus We, by Yevgeny Zamyatin—one of the most important dystopian novels of all time, influential on generations of writers, including Ursula K. Le Guin and Kurt Vonnegut. Not to mention George Orwell!

Of course, our acquiring editors have also selected great tales by S. Phillip Lenski (an original mystery), Stephanie Jaye Evans (a remarkable crime tale, as a mother plans to commit murder for her son), and a science fiction story by Hugo Award-winner David D. Levine. Great Stuff.

Plus we have stories by James Holding, Larry Tritten, and Murray Leinster...and what issue would be complete without a solve-it-yourself puzzler from Hal Charles?

Phillip Lenski [Michael Bracken Presents short story]“Bottled Up,” Hal Charles [Solve-It-Yourself Mystery]“Jamie’s Mother,” Stephanie Jaye Evans [Barb Goffman Presents short story]“The Baby Bit,” by James Holding [short story]The Call of Death, by Nicholas Carter [novel]

In Eden Valley, not all the monsters hide in the dark.
Genevieve Kane is happy in Seattle and is in no way concerned about the demon brand that appeared last year nor the painful—and painfully accurate—premonitions that have plagued her ever since. And she definitely isn’t longing for Sam, the sexy demon with whom she’d had a fling on her last trip.
Viv knows the only way to keep herself safe and sane is to distance herself from her past and the family who’d betrayed her, even if that means losing the best friends she’d ever had and another chance with Sam.
But distance doesn’t stop the visions, and all signs point to Viv being the only one who can save the town from the insatiable hunger hiding in Eden Lake’s icy depths. Will she give up the life she thought she wanted and risk being pulled back into Eden Valley forever? And can she overcome her personal demons for a chance at love with the demon she left behind?
Devil and the Deep, Blue Lake is the second book in a magical new paranormal women’s fiction series from USA Today Bestselling Author Amy Cissell, author of the Eleanor Morgan novels and the Oracle Bay series.

The Mucker by Edgar Rice Burroughs follows Billy Byrne, a violent street criminal from Chicago’s slums, who embraces his identity as a "mucker"—a thief, brawler, and outcast with only a code of loyalty to his own. After being falsely accused of murder, he is shanghaied onto a ship that hijacks a wealthy heiress, Barbara Harding. Initially brutal and defiant, Byrne begins to change when confronted by Barbara’s courage and moral strength. A storm wrecks the ship; he saves lives, rescues her from cannibal headhunters, and protects her in the jungle. Wounded and isolated, he falls in love, learns to read and speak with dignity, and sacrifices himself to save her father and fiancé. Believing him dead, Barbara mourns—until, months later, they reunite. Though love remains, Billy chooses honor over happiness, refusing to disrupt her world. A powerful tale of redemption, class, and self-sacrifice, The Mucker is Burroughs’ rawest, most human story.
