Synopsis

War Tactics: Land explores the monumental changes in military strategy and organization during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, focusing on the clash between France's mass conscription armies and Britain's professional forces. This period witnessed significant tactical innovation, such as the adoption of skirmishers and the development of the division and corps organizational structures, forever changing land warfare. Understanding these shifts is crucial, as they established the foundation for modern military practices; for instance, the French emphasis on maneuver warfare contrasted sharply with the British focus on disciplined linear tactics.

The book analyzes how mass conscription revolutionized battlefield tactics and forced the evolution of officer corps. It contrasts the merit-based French promotion system with the traditional British system of patronage, demonstrating how each nation adapted to the demands of war. By examining the political and social context of the French Revolution, the book elucidates how these factors influenced military developments. Ultimately, War Tactics: Land demonstrates how the era's changes redefined military thinking and practices.

The narrative progresses from an introduction of the French and British military systems to an examination of tactical innovations and transformations within the officer corps. Later chapters trace the British tactical evolution in response to French challenges, culminating in an assessment of the long-term impact of these changes on military doctrine. This offers a comparative analysis of the French and British military systems, providing a nuanced understanding of the factors that shaped warfare during this pivotal period of military history.

The French Revolution did not erupt suddenly on July 14, 1789. Rather, it was the result of deep-rooted issues that had been festering for decades. The Ancien Régime, a rigid social and political structure, created vast inequalities that left the majority of the population burdened with heavy taxes and little representation. At the same time, Enlightenment thinkers challenged traditional authority, inspiring people to demand fundamental rights. Adding to these tensions was a financial crisis that left the government unable to function effectively, further alienating the common people from the monarchy.
Under the Ancien Régime, French society was divided into three estates. The First Estate, composed of the clergy, and the Second Estate, made up of the nobility, enjoyed numerous privileges, including exemption from most taxes. The Third Estate, which included the bourgeoisie, urban workers, and peasants, bore the financial weight of the nation. These commoners made up the vast majority of the population but had little say in political matters. Discontent grew as food prices soared, wages stagnated, and oppressive taxes drained the resources of ordinary citizens. The nobility and clergy, unwilling to relinquish their privileges, further deepened the divide between the ruling class and the people.
As social inequality worsened, Enlightenment ideas provided a new way of thinking. Philosophers such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Montesquieu argued against absolute monarchy and promoted concepts such as liberty, equality, and popular sovereignty. Their writings spread widely, influencing the educated middle class and encouraging political discussions. Many began to question the legitimacy of the monarchy and the rigid class system. The belief that power should come from the people, rather than from divine right, gained traction, setting the stage for a confrontation with the old order.

Once designed to amplify the voices of farmers, laborers, and the underrepresented, the Philippine party-list system has now become the ultimate low-risk, high-reward investment for the well-connected. In Partylist for Profit: How the Rich Hijacked a System for the Poor, A.A. Castor peels back the glossy surface of legislative charity to expose the machinery of legalized profiteering, dynastic expansion, and quiet political laundering.
With deadpan seriousness and a dose of dark humor, this book walks readers through the insider's playbook of how to build, fund, and quietly control a party-list with as little accountability—and as much profit—as possible. From choosing a vague advocacy ("OFWs" or "transport workers," anyone?) to securing alphabet-friendly names for ballot advantage, to recycling nominees across election cycles and repackaging greed as governance, this is not a how-to—this is a how-it's-done.
Perfect for political junkies, aspiring operators, or just disillusioned citizens looking to finally understand why nothing ever changes, Partylist for Profit isn't just a book—it's a public service announcement disguised as satire.
Learn how power is bought, maintained, and quietly passed down—not through revolution, but registration. After all, in today's politics, you don't need a platform. You just need a seat.

    Code of the Illuminati

In 1776 Adam Weishaupt, a respected German professor of Canon Law, founded a covert revolutionary group - The Illuminati - a secret society dedicated to destroying repressive regimes and shaping a world government in terms of Liberty and Equality. These ideals surfaced with violent emphasis during the French Revolution, which many saw as the work of Illuminati agitators. The Jesuit Abbé Augustin Barruel was one such. In this book, (the third of his four-part monumental work on the French Revolution), he describes - from contemporary sources and accounts - the history, organization and ethos of the Illuminati, and their role in the destruction of the 'ancien regime'. This is an important work on the Illuminati, and is especially relevant considering the continuing belief that the Order remains among us, still working secretly to achieve their goals.

Become Ungovernable is a provocative new work of political thought setting out to reclaim "freedom", "justice", and "democracy", revolutionary ideas that are all too often warped in the interests of capital and the state. Revealing the mirage of mainstream democratic thought and the false promises of liberal political ideologies, H. L. T. Quan offers an alternative approach: an abolition feminism drawing on a kaleidoscope of refusal praxes, and on a deep engagement with the Black Radical Tradition and queer analytics.

With each chapter anchored by episodes from the long history of resistance and rebellions against tyranny, Quan calls for us to take up a feminist ethic of living rooted in the principles of radical inclusion, mutuality, and friendship as part of the larger toolkit for confronting fascism, white supremacy, and the neoliberal labor regime.

A New York Times bestseller and enduring classic, All About Love is the acclaimed first volume in feminist icon bell hooks' ""Love Song to the Nation"" trilogy.  All About Love reveals what causes a polarized society, and how to heal the divisions that cause suffering. Here is the truth about love, and inspiration to help us instill caring, compassion, and strength in our homes, schools, and workplaces.
“The word ‘love’ is most often defined as a noun, yet we would all love better if we used it as a verb,” writes bell hooks as she comes out fighting and on fire in All About Love. Here, at her most provocative and intensely personal, renowned scholar, cultural critic and feminist bell hooks offers a proactive new ethic for a society bereft with lovelessness--not the lack of romance, but the lack of care, compassion, and unity. People are divided, she declares, by society’s failure to provide a model for learning to love.
As bell hooks uses her incisive mind to explore the question “What is love?” her answers strike at both the mind and heart. Razing the cultural paradigm that the ideal love is infused with sex and desire, she provides a new path to love that is sacred, redemptive, and healing for individuals and for a nation. The Utne Reader declared bell hooks one of the “100 Visionaries Who Can Change Your Life.” All About Love is a powerful, timely affirmation of just how profoundly her revelations can change hearts and minds for the better.
