The origins of the Crusades lie in a complex blend of religious fervor, political ambition, and cultural conflict that took shape in the late 11th century. At the heart of the movement was a passionate desire by Christian Europe to reclaim the Holy Land—particularly Jerusalem—from Muslim control. For centuries, Jerusalem had held sacred meaning for Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike. However, by the late 11th century, it was under the rule of the Seljuk Turks, who had taken control of large parts of the eastern Mediterranean, including important Christian pilgrimage routes.
The political climate of Europe during this period also played a significant role. Feudalism was the dominant system, and many nobles were constantly embroiled in local power struggles. At the same time, the Church had become the most powerful institution in Europe. It was in this context that Pope Urban II made a historic call to action in 1095 at the Council of Clermont. Responding to an appeal from Byzantine Emperor Alexios I for military assistance against the Seljuks, the pope called on Western Christians to take up arms and march to the East. His speech stirred a wave of religious enthusiasm, as he promised absolution of sins and eternal salvation to those who joined the cause.
This call ignited a massive response. Men from all walks of life—knights, peasants, and even children—began preparing for what would become known as the First Crusade. For many, the Crusades were not only a spiritual mission but also a chance for adventure, wealth, and social mobility. The idea of fighting in the name of God merged with more worldly motives, creating a powerful and often contradictory force.

Enheduanna, also known as En-hedu-ana or Enheduana, is widely regarded as the world's first known author and poet, as well as one of the earliest recorded female figures in history. She lived in ancient Mesopotamia during the 23rd century BCE and held the esteemed position of high priestess in the city of Ur, which was a thriving center of Sumerian civilization. Enheduanna's literary works and religious contributions have left an indelible mark on the cultural and literary landscape of ancient Mesopotamia. Enheduanna was born in the city of Ur, located in what is now southern Iraq, around 2285 BCE. She was the daughter of King Sargon of Akkad, who established the Akkadian Empire, and Queen Tashlultum. Being born into a royal family, Enheduanna enjoyed a privileged upbringing and received an exceptional education in literature, religion, and politics. At a young age, Enheduanna's intelligence, eloquence, and spiritual devotion were recognized, leading to her appointment as the high priestess of the moon god Nanna at the renowned temple in Ur. This position bestowed upon her significant religious authority and influence within the society, making her a powerful figure in both the political and spiritual realms. Enheduanna's most significant contributions are her literary works, which include a collection of hymns, poems, and prayers dedicated to various deities. These compositions were written in the Sumerian language, the oldest known written language in human history. Through her writings, Enheduanna expressed her deep reverence for the gods and sought to establish a personal connection between the divine and humanity.

The self is who we are. It is the things that we do with our daily routines. We are different from others, and yet, we are the same, connected to everyone. We think, and therefore, we are. It is life and death—the time spent existing. It is what we dream and hope and why our hearts beat. It is creativity and success. We are defined by what is “us.”
When we talk about discipline, we are looking at control. It is the way of moving from one thing to another. It is the ability to see weaknesses and push beyond them. It is about knowing what is proper for accomplishment and how to avoid the temptation to abandon and wander into something else. It is the ability to focus.Self-discipline is both self-control and self-mastery—the centering of ourselves and seeing what we really want. There is a skill to finding what you want and knowing how to go get it.
We are all dreamers. Every human has a creative side, and more often than not, this side of ourselves tends to be a bit underappreciated. The reasoning is that in order to show success in the creative, to make our dreams become a reality—it requires determination, drive, and discipline.
