Beschreibung

The anthology 'The Life and Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius' offers a comprehensive exploration of the inner workings and thought processes of one of history's most revered Stoic philosophers. The collection weaves through a range of literary forms, from intimate reflections to broader meditative essays, capturing the enduring legacy of Marcus Aurelius's philosophies. By delving deep into themes such as virtue, duty, and the pursuit of wisdom against the backdrop of life's adversities, this collection serves both as a window into the Stoic mindset and as an inspirational guide for contemporary readers. The pieces selected highlight essential passages that continue to resonate, demonstrating their timelessness and profound impact. Curated by George Lang, the anthology represents a mosaic of voices, bridging historical insights with modern interpretations. The text aligns with both classical scholarship and the revival of Stoicism in contemporary thought, showcasing how the enduring principles established by Marcus Aurelius have permeated various epochs and cultures. Contributors bring together a wealth of knowledge and perspectives, offering reflections that complement and enhance Aurelius's own writings. This diversity not only enriches the discussion but also places the ancient Roman philosopher within a broader, more inclusive narrative that speaks to readers across time. This collection is essential for anyone looking to engage with the philosophical teachings of Marcus Aurelius through a variety of lenses and scholarly approaches. It provides an exceptional opportunity to immerse oneself in the philosophical dialogues of a bygone era while appreciating their relevance in today's world. The only book ever written in the history genre that succinctly tells the progressive and redemptive course of America as revealed in the stories behind the American holidays.

Ever wonder why everyone wants to immigrate to America? Rediscovering America answers that question, and it’s like no other history you have ever read. More than an account of people, dates, and events, this story is about the hidden
hand of a purposeful historical development where the main actors are colorful characters, participating in an American drama of little known but remarkable events where overcoming incredible odds of failure is more unbelievable and
engaging than fiction. And while each chapter is a stand-alone tale—some quite wild—about what is behind each of the American holidays, the page- and chapterturning appeal of Rediscovering America is in the narratives that link the holiday
stories together, revealing an account of progress and redemption in America covering over four hundred years—never before told in a concise and readable book.

Some historians have called the Seven Years’ War the first true world war, and they make a good point. In Europe, an alliance of Great Britain, the German state of Hanover (the ruling house of Britain was from Hanover) and Prussia fought a series of battles against an alliance of France, Austria and Russia, with the occasional involvement of some other European powers such as Sweden and Spain. The war was also fought in many other parts of the world, including in India, West Africa and the Caribbean, where both the French and the British had colonies. In addition to the fighting on land, battles were fought between ships on the high seas, and these naval battles were generally won by the British, who boasted the 18th century’s best navy. Ultimately, this globally coordinated war involved five continents and at least 29 states and tribal confederacies, with a casualty toll in the millions and the maps forever altered.
The war’s origins stemmed from the rivalry between two sets of European powers that found expression in the War of the Austrian Succession of 1740-1748. In 1740, Charles VI was emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, a dysfunctional aggregation of practically independent states corresponding roughly to what is now Germany. He was of the House of Habsburg, as were preceding emperors, but he had no sons, and the Salic Law then in effect in Germany forbade female succession. Charles did not want to see the Habsburg family lands, which were vast, broken up. These lands included Austria, Bohemia, Silesia, Hungary, the Austrian Netherlands (Belgium), Milan, Mantua, Parma, and Tuscany, making the Habsburgs one of the richest and most powerful families in Europe.

“A fascinating account of why some general-interest policy reforms stick and others fall apart . . .  This is political science at its best.” —Julian Zelizer, Princeton UniversityWinner of the Louis Brownlow Book Award, National Academy of Public Administration Reforms at Risk is the first book to closely examine what happens to sweeping and seemingly successful policy reforms after they are passed. Most books focus on the politics of reform adoption, yet as Eric Patashnik shows here, the political struggle does not end when major reforms become enacted. Why do certain highly praised policy reforms endure while others are quietly reversed or eroded away?Patashnik peers into some of the most critical arenas of domestic-policy reform—including taxes, agricultural subsidies, airline deregulation, emissions trading, welfare state reform, and reform of government procurement—to identify the factors that enable reform measures to survive. He argues that the reforms that stick destroy an existing policy subsystem and reconfigure the political dynamic. Patashnik demonstrates that sustainable reforms create positive policy feedbacks, transform institutions, and often unleash the “creative destructiveness” of market forces.Reforms at Risk debunks the argument that reforms inevitably fail because Congress is prey to special interests, and the book provides a more realistic portrait of the possibilities and limits of positive change in American government. It is essential reading for scholars and practitioners of U.S. politics and public policy, offering practical lessons for anyone who wants to ensure that hard-fought reform victories survive.“In this penetrating and important book, Eric Patashnik explores the political circumstances that enable reforms to endure.” —Paul J. Quirk, University of British Columbia

Kingdom of Wolves clears the path to understanding the unconscious drives that motivate if not govern the behaviours of predators, abusers, bullies, their victims and the underlying issues that draw them to each other. The author demystifies the complexities of human behaviour, merging old concepts with new as she guides you through the emotional and psychological landscapes of the abuser’s and victim’s psyche. She provides a simple but profound insight into the adverse causes and outcomes of early childhood and adolescent development, linking it to present-day adult ways of life. Juliana, once a victim of domestic abuse herself, believes that freedom, reclamation, redemption and wholeness of spirit can only be achieved by taking a journey inward. She hopes through this book to provide a way forward for victims who are trapped by their past experiences or present-day abusive circumstances and concludes that the key to recognition, understanding and prevention of violence and abuse can only be gained through acquiring a deeper awareness of human behaviour.
