Sinopse

After the publication of "The Wonderful Wizard of OZ" I began to receive letters from children, telling me of their pleasure in reading the story and asking me to "write something more" about the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman. At first I considered these little letters, frank and earnest though they were, in the light of pretty compliments; but the letters continued to come during succeeding months, and even years.

Finally I promised one little girl, who made a long journey to see me and prefer her request,—and she is a "Dorothy," by the way—that when a thousand little girls had written me a thousand little letters asking for the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman I would write the book, Either little Dorothy was a fairy in disguise, and waved her magic wand, or the success of the stage production of "The Wizard of OZ" made new friends for the story, For the thousand letters reached their destination long since—and many more followed them.

And now, although pleading guilty to long delay, I have kept my promise in this book. L. FRANK BAUM., Chicago, June, 1904

To those excellent good fellows and comedians David C. Montgomery and Frank A. Stone whose clever personations of the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow have delighted thousands of children throughout the land, this book is gratefully dedicated by THE AUTHOR

Chapter 1

Tip Manufactures a Pumpkinhead

In the Country of the Gillikins, which is at the North of the Land of Oz, lived a youth called Tip. There was more to his name than that, for old Mombi often declared that his whole name was Tippetarius; but no one was expected to say such a long word when "Tip" would do just as well.

This boy remembered nothing of his parents, for he had been brought when quite young to be reared by the old wom-an known as Mombi, whose reputation, I am sorry to say, was none of the best. For the Gillikin people had reason to suspect her of indulging in magical arts, and therefore hesi-tated to associate with her.

Mombi was not exactly a Witch, because the Good Witch who ruled that part of the Land of Oz had forbidden any oth-er Witch to exist in her dominions. So Tip's guardian, how-ever much she might aspire to working magic, realized it was unlawful to be more than a Sorceress, or at most a Wizardess.

Tip was made to carry wood from the forest, that the old woman might boil her pot. He also worked in the corn-fields, hoeing and husking; and he fed the pigs and milked the four-horned cow that was Mombi's especial pride...

Two young people, one faith and a shared passion for the truth of God’s Word – that was the beginning of the story of Francis and Edith Schaeffer.  Together, they wanted to follow wherever God would lead them and to share the Good News about Jesus with whoever God would send them. But little did they imagine that God would lead them to a remote village in the mountains of Switzerland. Nor did they foresee how God would use their ministry in that little mountain chalet to impact people all over the world. Francis and Edith Schaeffer opened their home to anyone searching for truth. They spent their whole lives helping people to see that the Bible’s answers to life’s questions are relevant and true; in their time, and for all time. The Trailblazer series collects great stories from Christians of the past and delivers them to the young people of today. This gripping and astonishing story from Rachel Lane will challenge young readers to serve God as Francis and Edith Schaeffer did.

‘This captivating series of adventures is ideal for those who love whimsical humour’ Guardian, Best Children’s Books of the Year
Written by Carnegie and Costa Award-winning author Sally Gardner, Pernickety Boo is the unforgettable story of a very unusual umbrella.
    'Hello,' said the umbrella.
'Gosh,' said the boy. The umbrella's handle was carved in the shape of a dog’s head, with a very long snout and a shiny nose and ears that flopped back. 'You can talk.'
'I suppose I can,' said the umbrella.
'Do you have a name?' asked the boy.
'No,' said the umbrella. 'Do I need a name?'
'Yes,' said the small boy. 'You need one for someone to let you in at the front door, and another name to be let out the back door.'
Brought to life by a careless sorcerer, Pernickety Boo is a well-educated umbrella with unexplored magical powers – and after he is left behind on the London Underground by his forgetful creator, Pernickety must find an owner: someone who will truly love him.
So when Pernickety meets young Sylvie Moonshine and is welcomed into her home, he thinks that all of his prayers have been answered. But there are plenty of other people who are also interested in the magical umbrella, and who threaten to separate Pernickety from his beloved Sylvie, unless he can find a way to stop them.
Perfect for fans of A Bear Called Paddington, The Velveteen Rabbit, and Winnie-the-Pooh, this instant classic is a book for the whole family to share.
In this heartwarming tale of friendship and imagination, Pernickety Boo, the magical umbrella, embarks on a journey that is both humorous and touching. The story is a delightful blend of social themes and juvenile fiction, perfect for the old and the young, the avid reader and the reluctant one.
For fans of Adam Gidwitz (The Madre de Aguas of Cuba), Hatem Aly (The Book That Almost Rhymed), Andrew Clements (The Frindle Files), Katherine Rundell (The Explorer), and Susan Cooper (Peter and Wendy).
