Sinopsis

"Science of Preservation" explores the intersection of art and science in preserving our cultural heritage. It reveals how museums and conservationists employ material science, environmental control, and conservation ethics to combat artifact degradation. Understanding an artifact's composition, from textiles to ceramics, allows for tailored preservation. For example, controlling temperature and humidity can dramatically slow decay, a key insight for artifact care.

The book examines the historical context of preservation, highlighting how early, aesthetically-driven efforts sometimes caused damage. It emphasizes a holistic approach, considering an artifact's history, material properties, and the impact of interventions. Modern preservation science, fueled by chemistry and physics, has revolutionized approaches, focusing on respectful, reversible, and well-documented interventions.

The book's structure guides readers through core concepts, starting with material science and environmental control's role in artifact degradation. It then delves into preservation techniques for materials like paper, textiles, metals, and stone, presenting case studies from global museums. Finally, it addresses ethical dilemmas surrounding authenticity and intervention, offering a comprehensive understanding of artifact preservation.

Elton John is not only "still standing," he is a living superlative, the ultimate record-breaking, award-winning survivor of the great era of pop and rock music that he helped to shape during his six decades in the music industry. Yet few of his numerous biographies and song guides take him as a historical subject worthy of scholarly study.

In contrast, On Elton John approaches the artist seriously and analytically, while still couched in a highly accessible style. Author Matthew Restall offers a new way to explore Sir Elton's career and music within the contexts of other artists and of sweeping shifts in popular culture during his lifetime. Each of the ten chapters is anchored to an Elton song, rooted in its pop culture history, and advances a clear argument, pairing him with figures ranging from Bernie (Bernie Taupin, his lyricist) to Bennie (of the Jets), from "frenemy" David Bowie to artists like Rod Stewart, Aretha Franklin, and Dua Lipa, from Diana (the princess) to Jesus (yes, that one).

A must-have for fans, On Elton John will appeal to a wide range of audiences interested in music history, popular culture, and the social issues of our era.

    Muisca Confederation - The Land...

The Muisca Confederation was one of the most sophisticated political entities in pre-Columbian South America, emerging in the highlands of present-day Colombia. The origins of this powerful society can be traced back to the earliest inhabitants of the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes, a region characterized by fertile valleys, cool mountain climates, and abundant natural resources. Over time, these early settlers developed complex social structures, agricultural techniques, and political institutions that would form the foundation of the Muisca Confederation.
The first groups to settle in the high-altitude plateaus of the Andean region arrived thousands of years ago, likely migrating from Central America or other parts of South America. These early inhabitants lived in small, semi-nomadic communities, relying on hunting, fishing, and rudimentary farming. As they adapted to their environment, they developed advanced agricultural methods, cultivating maize, potatoes, quinoa, and other crops suited to the high-altitude terrain. The fertile lands and steady supply of food allowed for population growth, leading to the establishment of permanent settlements.
As Muisca society evolved, it became increasingly hierarchical, with distinct roles emerging among its members. The transition from small, scattered villages to organized chiefdoms marked a significant turning point in their history. Power began to concentrate in the hands of local leaders, or caciques, who governed their respective communities. Over time, these leaders expanded their influence, forming alliances and asserting control over larger territories. The most powerful of these rulers eventually became the Zipa of Bacatá and the Zaque of Hunza, the two principal leaders who governed the northern and southern regions of the Muisca Confederation.

A pedagogical primer on integrating Black feminist thought, critical race studies, and America's most beloved pop star.

In 2010—long before the release of Lemonade—Professor Kevin Allred created the university course "Politicizing Beyoncé" to both wide acclaim and controversy. He outlines his pedagogical philosophy in Ain't I a Diva?, exploring the process of teaching Beyoncé and what it means to use a superstar to blow up the canon. Allred brings his syllabus to life by pairing music videos and songs with historical and academic texts, and combines analysis with classroom anecdotes. Topics range from a capitalist critique of "Run the World (Girls)" to the politics of self-care found in "Flawless"; Beyoncé's art is read alongside Black feminist thinkers, including Kimberlé Crenshaw, Octavia Butler, and Sojourner Truth.

Interrogating the entertainer's career through a media studies lens, Allred attests that pop culture is so much more than a guilty pleasure—it's an access point for education, entertainment, critical inquiry, and politics.
