Synopsis

This martial arts book digs deep into the standard Taekwondo patterns to extract proven fighting methods that unite ancient philosophy and strategy to teach effective, tactical self-defence. The book follows the history of the Korean people, starting with the myths of its origins dating from 2333 BC, and its culture, focusing on the important historic influences of the surrounding nations. All have combined in the development and evolution of the Korean fighting art of Taekwondo. These ancient and deadly fighting techniques have survived over several millennia, ever since people first defended their lives and property from wild beasts and ravaging bands of criminals. The first part of the book shows simple techniques that have been refined using analysis gained by Koreans over the centuries. It is presented in a careful mix of physical exercises designed to develop spontaneous response from muscle memory in the event of an unavoidable attack. The second half introduces more advanced students of the martial arts to more complex fighting tactics, and the profound philosophy taught to black belts, aimed at uniting body, mind, and spirit.

At age forty-seven, a mother of two, Debbie Moderow was not your average musher in the Iditarod, but that's where she found herself when, less than 200 miles from the finish line, her dogs decided they didn't want to run anymore. After all her preparation, after all the careful management of her team, and after their running so well for over a week, the huskies balked. But the sting of not completing the race after coming so far was nothing compared to the disappointment Moderow felt in having lost touch with her dogs. Fast into the Night is the gripping story of Moderow's journeys along the Iditarod trail with her team of spunky huskies: Taiga and Su, Piney and Creek, Nacho and Zeppy, Juliet and the headstrong leader, Kanga. The first failed attempt crushed Moderow's confidence, but after reconnecting with her dogs she returned and ventured again to Nome, pushing through injuries, hallucinations, epic storms, flipped sleds, and clashing personalities, both human and canine. And she prevailed.

An energetic, lyrical, genre-defying account of the 2017 tennis season.
In The Circuit: A Tennis Odyssey, the award-winning poet-and Paris Review sports columnist-Rowan Ricardo Phillips chronicles 2017 as seen through the unique prism of its pivotal, revelatory, and historic tennis season. The annual tennis schedule is a rarity in professional sports in that it encapsulates the calendar year. And like the year, it's divided into four seasons, each marked by a final tournament: the Grand Slams.
Phillips charts the year from winter's Australian Open, where Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal renewed their rivalry in a match for the ages, to fall's U.S. Open. Along the way, Phillips paints a new, vibrant portrait of tennis, one that captures not only the emotions, nerves, and ruthless tactics of the point-by-point game but also the quicksilver movement of victory and defeat on the tour, placing that sense of upheaval within a broader cultural and social context. Tennis has long been thought of as an escapist spectacle: a bucolic, separate bauble of life.
The Circuit will convince you that you don't leave the world behind as you watch tennis-you bring it with you.

The average fly fisher spends just 15.6 days per year on the water. Of course, few of us are fortunate enough to spend every day of every month casting into riffles, pools, and undercut banks in search of those finicky browns, brooks, rainbows, and cutthroats. Luckily, the diverse collection of gear in 365 Trout Flies provides some measure of solace to those legions of desk-bound fly fishers. Presenting enough flies to span the year, expert fly fisherman John van Vliet offers suggestions for the spectrum of salmonids fly fishers are most likely to encounter as well as the breadth of locations—from small, pastoral chalk streams to forested, free-stone rivers. Each spread depicts a group of three flies along with materials recipes, captions from the author detailing how and where to fish them, and interesting related historical facts. For ease of reference, the book is organized into five categories covering each of the major fly types—nymphs, dries, wets, streamers, and terrestrials—and is illustrated throughout with exclusive macrophotography of the flies themselves. The front matter and section openers are illustrated with gorgeous, scenic fly-fishing photos. From traditional stalwarts like the Adams, Light Cahill, Royal Wulff, and Hare’s Ear Nymph to more modern twists like synthetic inchworms, sand-encased caddis emergers, and the Chernobyl ant, John van Vliet’s 365 Trout Flies functions as both a practical how-to guide for the fly enthusiast and a handsome collection highlighting the art of these faux-entomological wonders.

As the head coach of the University of Alabama's football team, Nick Saban is perhaps the most influential-and controversial-man in the sport. Unpredictable in his professional loyalties, uncompromising in his vision, and unyielding in his pursuit of perfection, the highest-paid coach in college football has changed the face of the game. His program-building vision has delivered packed stadiums, rabid fans, legions of detractors, countless NFL draft picks, and a total of four national championships, including three in the last five years. Though a great deal is known about Nick Saban the coach, not much is known about Nick Saban the man. Through unprecedented interviews with more than 250 friends, coworkers, rivals, former players, and others, Monte Burke reveals the defining moments of the coach's life. He discusses Saban's rapid and at times rocky ascent up the assistant coaching ranks; his complicated relationship with one of his coaching mentors, Bill Belichick; the birth of his now-famous "Process;" his dramatic and controversial departures from three different high-profile football teams; and much more.Saban paints a portrait of a complex and compelling man, fundamentally shaped by both his past and the game he loves, in a way that no previous book has.
