During the first half of 1944, the Americans and British commenced a massive buildup of men and resources in the United Kingdom, while Allied Supreme Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower and military brass planned the details of an enormous and complex amphibious invasion of Europe. The most obvious place for an invasion was just across the narrow English Channel, and the Germans had built coastal fortifications throughout France to protect against just such an invasion. Cloaking the vastest amphibious landing in history in layers of shrouding misdirection represented an undertaking second only in ambitiousness to the grand seaborne invasion itself, yet with Operation Bodyguard, the Allies attempted precisely that task in regards to 1944's D-Day. Bodyguard would, if successful, confuse the Wehrmacht occupiers of France about the actual place where Operation Overlord would ultimately come ashore. A further element of Bodyguard was Operation Fortitude. Fortitude marked one of the most ambitious deception plans in the history of warfare. Fortitude was divided into two parts, North and South. Both parts involved the creation of fake armies, one based in Edinburgh in the north and one on the southeast coast of England which threatened Pas de Calais, the most obvious area of France for invasion. The Allies went to remarkable lengths to ensure the success of the operation. A fictional U.S. Army group under George Patton was created in the south. Every effort was made to ensure operational security while also allowing the Germans to see the dummy war material. The success or failure of these planned misdirections would have deadly serious consequences for the men wading ashore through the Normandy surf in early summer of 1944. Put simply, the difference in the number and deployment of German forces facing them could determine if they succeeded or failed.Show book

The Russian Famine of 1921-1922 did not occur in isolation; it was the result of a complex set of conditions that had been building over several years, particularly following the immense strain caused by World War I and the subsequent Russian Revolution. In the years leading up to the famine, the Russian Empire had been subjected to a series of crises, both external and internal, that would lead to an agricultural disaster of unprecedented proportions. World War I, which had raged from 1914 to 1918, devastated Russia. The country’s military and civilian populations were ravaged by the conflict, and the war placed immense pressure on the economy. Agriculture, which was the backbone of Russia’s economy, was particularly affected. Many of the country’s able-bodied men had been conscripted into the army, leaving the fields untended and the production of food drastically reduced. Additionally, the war led to widespread shortages of basic supplies such as fuel, equipment, and fertilizers. The agricultural sector, already fragile, was further crippled by the lack of resources, leaving the country’s population vulnerable to the consequences of famine. The Russian Revolution of 1917, which brought the Bolsheviks to power, intensified the situation. The overthrow of the Romanov dynasty and the subsequent civil war between the Red and White factions created further instability. The Bolsheviks, under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin, implemented policies that would have significant implications for food production. War Communism, introduced as an emergency measure, included grain requisitioning from the peasantry to supply the Red Army and urban centers. However, these policies were deeply unpopular and led to widespread resentment. The forced seizure of grain and foodstuffs left many rural areas without enough resources to sustain their own populations, further exacerbating food shortages.Show book

Students of operational art, multinational operations, and amphibious warfare will find Staiger’s narrative interesting and thought-provoking." — Military Review The Allied amphibious operation codenamed Shingle was launched in late January 1944. It was opposed by German forces in the area of Anzio and Nettuno. Success depended on the element of surprise, and the speed with which the invaders could build up strength and move inland. This was understood by General Mark Clark, commander of the US Fifth Army, but not fully understood by his subordinate commanders. This German account focuses on the landing at Anzio as it was the only one that failed to achieve its objective of smashing the German defense and achieving operational freedom of movement. The battle lasted over six weeks, with mistakes made by leadership on both sides, and consequently also great sacrifice by soldiers on both sides. But the operation was not a German success either, and attempts to prevent the creation of a strong bridgehead failed. Ultimately the Allies would reach Rome, and the Allies applied lessons from this battle to facilitate the success of Overlord, launched five months later. While not complete, as the author did not have access to some of the war diaries of higher levels of German command, this is still one of the best German accounts of Operation Shingle and is here translated into English for the first time.Show book
