Synopsis

In the novella "From Russia with Chilli and Garlic Sauce," the legend of Johnny Two Kebabs is revealed as being an astonishing reality. For years, the world has questioned the existence of this larger-than-life character, dismissing him as an urban myth or a product of Irish folklore. But now, in his own words, Johnny Two Kebabs steps out of the shadows to set the record straight.
This is the man who, on 15th June 2011, after drinking 13 pints of lager, polished off two doner kebabs in 1 minute and 59 seconds. Here, he writes candidly about his experiences in the high-stakes world of international intrigue and seduction as he pulls back the curtain on London's dark underbelly.
Amidst assassins, Irish pubs, kebab shops, and under the influence of super-strength lager, Johnny recounts how he thwarted a Russian assassination plot on British soil. As he navigates the perilous world of high-stakes intrigue, he paints a vivid picture of a life filled with danger, passion, beer and the doner kebab.

Gerald Diffey has spent four decades immersed in the world of food, wine and hospitality, from early days waiting tables in old English hotels to establishing two of the best places in the world to drink and eat: the award-winning Gerald’s Bar in North Carlton– Heston Blumenthal described it as ‘a proper, proper old-fashioned sort of bar’– and Gerald’s Bar in San Sebastian.
Beggars Belief is a collection of funny, poignant, insightful and just plain ludicrous stories from Gerald’s life in kitchens and behind bars: his formative years in the UK, memories of food and family; tales and tips from forty years of service; journeys and meals, people and places, from lunch on the side of a volcano in Sicily to dinner on a beach in East Timor; stories and recipes and drinks suggestions from North Carlton and San Sebastian; vignettes, slices of life, observations.
‘Romance,’ writes Gerald in the introduction. ‘That’s what I sell. Sensual pleasures. Sights, sounds, smells, touch, taste. Cyrano de Bergerac said: “I have tried to live my whole life with panache.” If I said that, I’d sound like a twat. But you get the drift. I’m off to bone some quails.’

As children we can’t help but dream of all of the amazing things that we will accomplish. Then life happens. We get a job, we get a house, and we get into debt. We settle. We trade away our youth, for security in old age. We spend countless hours performing mundane tasks that leave us depleted and empty. Our souls crave meaning, but we are too afraid to make any change. We work for the weekend. Work for the holidays. Work for retirement. We live to work, rather than working to live.Through sardonic humour, Wage Slave highlights the absurdity of the modern approach to work and life.
