Synopsis

In "History of the Intellectual Development of Europe," John William Draper embarks on an ambitious exploration of the evolution of human thought from the Middle Ages to the dawn of modernity. Draper employs a didactic literary style that is both engaging and rigorously analytical, deftly weaving together historical events, philosophical advancements, and scientific progress to elucidate the intricate tapestry of European intellectual history. The work reflects the burgeoning spirit of the Enlightenment, encapsulating the tension between religious dogma and emerging scientific rationalism, while also addressing the socio-political context that fostered or hindered intellectual pursuits. John William Draper, an American physician, chemist, and historian, was profoundly influenced by the Age of Enlightenment and its emphasis on reason and empirical evidence. His diverse background in science and philosophy complemented his deep interest in the history of ideas, leading him to confront the prevailing religious orthodoxy with a scientific lens. Draper's passion for education and his commitment to advancing knowledge are evident throughout the text, making it not only a historical account but also a manifesto for rational thought. This landmark work is an essential read for anyone interested in the interplay of science, philosophy, and history. Draper's meticulous scholarship invites readers to ponder the trajectory of human thought and its implications for contemporary society. Both scholars and casual readers alike will find in Draper's narrative a compelling argument for the importance of intellectual freedom and the relentless quest for understanding.

A rare study that transforms our understanding of why youth die by suicide, why youth suicide clusters happen, and how to stop them

In Life under Pressure, Anna S. Mueller and Seth Abrutyn investigate the social roots of youth suicide and why certain places weather disproportionate incidents of adolescent suicides and suicide clusters. Through close examination of kids' lives in a community repeatedly rocked by youth suicide clusters, Mueller and Abrutyn reveal how the social worlds that youth inhabit and the various messages they learn in those spaces—about who they are supposed to be, mental illness, and help-seeking—shape their feelings about themselves and in turn their risk of suicide. With great empathy, Mueller and Abrutyn also identify the moments when adults unintentionally fail kids by not talking to them about suicide, teaching them how to seek help, or helping them grieve.

Through stories of survival, resilience, and even rebellion, Mueller and Abrutyn show how social environments can cause suicide and how they can be changed to help kids discover a life worth living. By revealing what it is like to live and die in one community, Life under Pressure offers tangible solutions to one of the twenty-first century's most tragic public health problems.

    AUSCHWITZ CHILDREN AND MENGELE...

In the name of humanity, that was the explanation of Dr. Claus Karl Schilling for the execution of malaria experiments on 1,200 inmates of the Dachau concentration camp during the Second World War. The reputable Schilling had come to Dachau with the personal permission of the Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler in 1942 because he could use the prisoners as research subjects without the restriction of obtaining their consent. Schilling was not an exception.
Many Nazi doctors seized the unique opportunity to execute human experiments without legal and ethical restrictions during the war. The SS and the Wehrmacht either initiated or supported the research of the Nazi doctors. The central question that puzzled jurists and scientists is how these doctors, who were educated to heal people, could execute human experiments and deliberately harm and even kill people. To some scientists, their acts stand out as ‘exemplars of evil.’ This judgment is based on the fact that prisoners did not give their informed consent, the cruel and sometimes sadistic character of the experiments, and because never before in medical experiments was the death of the research subjects a central element of the research design. Many people think that ‘science went mad’ in the Third Reich and that Nazi doctors who committed these crimes were pseudo-scientists, sadists, and even monsters. However, thinking these perpetrators were madmen or monsters is a false explanation.
It is confronting to know that physicians belonging to the most advanced medical community in the world at the time, who had sworn to ‘do no harm, ' could commit these crimes.
On this trail, Dr. Josef Mengele’s pseudo-scientific research at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II led to immeasurable suffering among the camp’s children.
