Beschreibung

Rare Colors explores the science behind the planet's most uncommon hues, revealing how geological, biological, and chemical processes converge to create these stunning phenomena. It highlights that the rarity of certain colors isn't arbitrary; instead, it reflects specific, often extreme environmental conditions.

For instance, some mineral pigments form only under unique geological circumstances, making their colors valuable indicators of past environmental states. Similarly, rare coloration in animals and plants often arises from specialized biological pathways or evolutionary adaptations.

The book uniquely connects insights from geology, biology, and chemistry, illustrating how these disciplines intersect to explain color formation. By examining rare colors, the book provides new perspectives on environmental science, material science, and conservation efforts.

Rare Colors begins by establishing the physics of color and fundamental formation principles. It progresses through geological origins, biological pigments, and ephemeral colors, using visual data like photographs of unique locales and specimens to support its findings.

Have you ever wondered why the leaves of the Swiss cheese plant have holes? How aloe vera came to be harnessed as a medicinal powerhouse? Or why – despite your best efforts – you can’t keep your Venus flytrap alive?
You are not alone: houseplant expert Jane Perrone has asked herself those very questions, and in Legends of the Leaf she digs deep beneath the surface to reveal the answers. By exploring how they grow in the wild, and the ways they are understood and used by the people who live among them, we can learn almost everything we need to know about our cherished houseplants.
Along the way, she unearths their hidden histories and the journeys they’ve taken to become prized possessions in our homes: from the Kentia palms which stood either side of Queen Victoria’s coffin as she lay in state; to the dark history of the leopard lily, once exploited for its toxic properties; to English ivy, which provided fishermen with a source of bait.
Each houseplant history in this beautifully illustrated collection is accompanied by a detailed care guide and hard-won practical advice, but it is only by understanding their roots that we can truly unlock the secrets to helping plants thrive.

    Leibniz’s Monads - Because...

Ever wondered what reality is made of? If you're thinking atoms, molecules, or maybe regret and caffeine, think again. According to Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz—17th-century genius, calculus co-inventor, and metaphysical madlad—the universe is made of tiny, windowless soul-particles called monads. They don’t touch, don’t talk, and yet still manage to reflect the entire cosmos like cosmic disco balls of divine insight.
In Leibniz’s Monads: Because Particles with Feelings Totally Make Sense, Sophia Blackwell (author of Kant You Not) returns with another brutally honest, laugh-out-loud, actually-informative tour through one of philosophy’s weirdest, most ambitious systems. From the problem of evil to quantum physics, ecology to ethics, this book unpacks Leibniz’s windowless wonders and shows how his soul-marbles still haunt modern science, spirituality, and your existential crisis at 2am.
Perfect for students, armchair philosophers, or anyone who wants to understand metaphysics without crying in German.
    Inside, you’ll learn:
What monads are (and why they’re basically metaphysical Tamagotchis)
Why your soul is pre-synced with the universe like a divine group project
How this is somehow the best possible world (yes, even with all of… this)
What quantum physics, computer science, and modern consciousness studies owe to a guy who never left Leipzig
And why Leibniz remains philosophy’s most lovable, logic-obsessed optimist
If you like philosophy that doesn’t take itself too seriously—but still takes ideas seriously—this book is for you.
Warning: May cause sudden belief in soul-particles. Or at least very polite existential confusion.
