Synopsis

This edition includes the following editor's analysis: The traumatic life of J. M. Barrie, source of universal creativity

First published in 1902, “The Admirable Crichton” is a comic stage play written by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie, best remembered as the creator of Peter Pan.

“The Admirable Crichton” is a satirical comedy dealing with class and social structure. The play tells the story of an English family and a few of their servants, who get stranded on a deserted island for two years. In England the aristocracy was in charge and the servants loyally followed orders from them; however, on the island things are very different! So...what happens when they are rescued and all go back to England? Will everything go back to "normal"?

"The Admirable Crichton" is an interesting and entertaining play, but thoughtful at the same time.

Hanna Flint speaks from the heart in this personal and incisive reflection on how cinema has been the key to understanding herself and the world we live in. A staunch feminist of mixed-race heritage, Hanna has succeeded in an industry not designed for people like her. Interweaving anecdotes from familial and personal experiences—episodes of messy sex, introspection, and that time actor Vincent D'Onofrio tweeted that Hanna Flint sounded like a secret agent—she offers a critical eye on the screen's representation of women and ethnic minorities and their impact on her life, body image, and ambitions, with the humor and eloquence that has made her a leading film critic of her generation. Divided into the sections Origin Story, Coming of Age, Adult Material, Workplace Drama, and Strong Female Character, the book ponders how the creative industries could better reflect our multicultural society. Warm, funny, engaging, and full of film-infused lessons, Strong Female Character will appeal to listeners of all backgrounds and seeks to help us better see ourselves in our own eyes rather than letting others decide who and what we can be.

I felt rotten today. It's my mother's fault for singing 'My Way' at two o'clock in the morning at the top of the stairs. Just my luck to have a mother like her. There is a chance my parents could be alcoholics. Next year I could be in a children's home.

Meet Adrian Mole, a hapless teenager providing an unabashed, pimples-and-all glimpse into adolescent life. Writing candidly about his parents' marital troubles, the dog, his life as a tortured poet and 'misunderstood intellectual', Adrian's painfully honest diary is still hilarious and compelling reading thirty years after it first appeared.

Manners for the Metropolis is Frank Crowninshield’s razor-sharp, satirical guide to navigating the absurdities of New York’s high society in the early 20th century. With biting wit and upper-crust irony, Crowninshield delivers a tongue-in-cheek manual for proper behavior among the elite—offering “guidance” on everything from dinner etiquette and bath timing to the politics of RSVPs and the social capital of automobile ownership.
Part mockery, part mirror, this humorous exposé of "The 400" pokes fun at the pomp and posturing of the privileged class, leaving modern listeners both amused and astonished at the timelessness of social pretense. Narrator Mark Cohan brings just the right tone of charm and snark to this breezy, sophisticated romp through the gilded labyrinth of polite society.
Perfect for fans of satire, history, and vintage New York glamour.

Leo Larsson is a change-averse software developer with a forgettable presence and a life as bland and dry as Swedish crisp bread.
Leo has three goals: keep a low profile, avoid customer support at all costs, and deal with an obsessed dentist with a curious and possibly abnormal fascination with Leo's teeth.
Unfortunately, David, the spandex wearing know-it-all, mandates that everybody in the company, except architects, must provide customer support services.
The unambitious Leo decides that if climbing the corporate ladder means avoiding daily human interaction, it's time to scale. If only Leo wasn't such a lazy developer with a plow-shaped smile.
Turns out, being lazy is hard work.
