Synopsis

The "Odysseys of Homer, together with the shorter poems" is an epic that reimagines the age-old tale of Odysseus's tumultuous journey home after the Trojan War. Through a captivating blend of dactylic hexameter and vivid imagery, Homer crafts a narrative that explores themes of heroism, loyalty, and the quest for identity. The poem juxtaposes the trials faced by Odysseus with the domestic turmoil in Ithaca, where his faithful wife, Penelope, steadfastly awaits his return. This intricate layering of personal and epic narratives situates "The Odyssey" within the broader context of ancient Greek literature, offering insights into the moral and social values of the time. Homer, considered one of the greatest poets of antiquity, draws upon his rich cultural heritage, distinguished by oral storytelling traditions. The historical backdrop of the Trojan War and the complexities of human experience served as a profound impetus for his work, allowing him to weave tales that resonate across generations. His unique ability to capture the essence of the human condition has solidified his legacy, influencing countless writers and poets. For readers seeking a profound exploration of human resilience and ingenuity, this collection is essential. "The Odysseys of Homer" invites readers to journey alongside Odysseus, profoundly reflecting on the nature of home, love, and perseverance. Whether approached as a piece of literary heritage or a poignant reflection on the human spirit, this work remains timeless and essential.

From a prize-winning poet, a new collection that chronicles a weekend in the life of a group of friends coming of age in East Harlem at the dawn of the hip-hop era

Willie Perdomo, a native of East Harlem, has won praise as a hip, playful, historically engaged poet whose restlessly lyrical language mixes “city life with a sense of the transcendent” (NPR.org). In his fourth collection, The Crazy Bunch, Perdomo returns to his beloved neighborhood to create a vivid, kaleidoscopic portrait of a “crew” coming of age in East Harlem at the beginning of the 1990s. In poems written in couplets, vignettes, sketches, riffs, and dialogue, Perdomo recreates a weekend where surviving members of the crew recall a series of tragic events: “That was the summer we all tried to fly. All but one of us succeeded."

“This immersive poetry collection proceeds like a mixtape or a gnostic gospel … Oracular, intoxicating … Perdomo’s vibrant diction refashions the high lyric, drawing on local cant to render the intimacy of home, friendship, and shared loss. Part rhapsody, part elegy, the book memorializes neighborhood legends, and, even as it impishly indulges nostalgic romance, it never forgets, or forgives, the violence that threatens these young lives.”—The New Yorker

Published to commemorate the author’s 100th birthday, this wide-ranging and thoughtful collection reflects on history, colonisation, family, childhood, Aboriginal Dreaming, traditions and storytelling, working lives and people.
Sometimes wistful, melancholic, poignant, at times the author’s wry sense of fun and humour shines through.
When he arrived in Sydney in the 1960s, Bigambul man, Uncle Wes, was not allowed to tell his stories at schools. He set up a fire bucket in his backyard and invited families and children from the local Aboriginal community to come to sit around the fire and share his stories. It did not take long for the police to arrive and arrest him for hosting an unlawful gathering – he spent two days in lock-up for sharing his stories.
Uncle Wes is a living treasure of Aboriginal storytelling wisdom. Through his poems Uncle Wes invites the reader to join him by the fire as he generously shares his reflections and reminiscences on one hundred years.
'It is my pleasure to honour Uncle Wes for his work in retaining the age-old storytelling tradition of our people. It is important to maintain this tradition of our Elders sharing their knowledge and insight through story and verse. Thank you Uncle Wes, for sharing your poems with us as you celebrate your 100th year.' - Dr Anne Pattel-Gray: Head of the Australia First Nations Program, World Vision Australia
'Uncle Wes Marne has a unique ability to allow the reader to see through his experienced eyes. The power and wisdom of his words is now more than ever important for the future generations to understand the time and place they exist in.' - Ben Bowen: CEO, Indigenous Literacy Foundation

I Remember is a book of poetry inspired while traveling, spending time in nature and from my life's experiences. As a multiracial man in America, I feel I was given the opportunity to experience discrimination and prejudice from people of all walks of life. To learn I needed to love to accept myself first so I can witness firsthand society's most crucial issues of division and polarity. From the systemic illusion of separation from nature and humankind as a whole, due to the fact that most of us have yet to remember who we really are. Although the media is persistently promoting fear and division. The intention of this book is to share a sense of awareness of who we are beyond the body while inspiring the reader to love and have compassion for themselves and others at a greater capacity. Regardless of what one may have learned from their parents, culture, media, movies etc. I Remember is resurfacing to remind the masses we are all equal expressions of the Divine and now have a role to play in co-creating “The More Beautiful World our Hearts Know is Possible.”

What do we expect of an author who is unapologetically female? What do we expect of consuming art in general? Should a work be easy, should a work be safe?

Marylyn Tan’s debut volume, GAZE BACK, complicates ideas of femininity, queerness, and the occult. The feminine grotesque subverts the restrictions placed upon the feminine body to be attractive and its subjection to notions of the ideal. The occultic counterpoint to organised religion, then, becomes a way toward techniques of empowering the marginalised.

GAZE BACK, ultimately, is an instruction book, a grimoire, a call to insurrection—to wrest power back from the social structures that serve to restrict, control and distribute it amongst those few privileged above the disenfranchised.
