Synopsis

In "Walden, Walking & Civil Disobedience," Henry David Thoreau artfully weaves together philosophical musings and practical observations derived from his transformative experience living in a cabin near Walden Pond. The book, structured in a reflective style, captures Thoreau's journey of self-sufficiency and his profound insights on nature, society, and the individual's relationship with government. Through lyrical prose, Thoreau explores themes of simplicity, solitude, and civil resistance, elevating personal experience into a broader dialogue about social justice and moral integrity in an increasingly industrialized world. Thoreau, a key figure in the Transcendentalist movement, was deeply influenced by the natural beauty of his surroundings as well as the socio-political currents of 19th-century America. His time at Walden was both an experiment in minimalist living and a response to rampant materialism. Thoreau's passionate stance against slavery and his advocacy for nonviolent resistance stem from his belief in personal conscience, which forms a cornerstone of his philosophy. This classic work is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the interplay between nature, self-reliance, and morality. "Walden, Walking & Civil Disobedience" invites readers to contemplate their own lives in relation to the larger societal framework, challenging them to consider the ethical implications of their actions.

When our hero, Victor, needs a pseudonym to avoid embarrassing his wife after deciding to pen a book about up-sticking to Greece, he dusts off his original name of V. D. Bucket, the name he was stuck with after being abandoned in a bucket as a baby. As Victor adapts to his adopted homeland, he battles an obsession with the exacting hygiene standards he demanded during his illustrious career as a public health inspector, against the rather less exacting standards of rural Greece. His attempts to master the complexities of the language lead to a number of embarrassing misunderstandings.

Crossing paths with the local undertaker, Spiros, was a stroke of good luck for Victor and Marigold, since Spiros just happened to have a house to sell in the charming Greek mountain village of Meli. Of course Spiros didn't explain the strange arrangement of an Albanian living in the stone shed at the bottom of the garden, or mention the old lady's next door filthy habit of burning plastic every morning. He also failed to mention his late uncle had plunged to his death from the roof terrace, but did a wonderful job of selling them on the spectacular views.

"The Decameron" is a collection of novellas by Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio, written between 1348 and 1353. It is a masterpiece of Italian literature and a significant work of early Renaissance literature. The frame narrative of "The Decameron" revolves around ten individuals who flee plague-ridden Florence and take refuge in a villa in the countryside. To pass the time, they tell one another stories—100 in total—over the course of ten days. These stories encompass a wide range of themes, from love and morality to wit and humor, and they offer a vivid portrayal of Italian society in the 14th century.

Hannah Arendt, the author of The Origins of Totalitarianism and The Human Condition, began her scholarly career with an exploration of Saint Augustine's concept of caritas, or neighborly love, written under the direction of Karl Jaspers and the influence of Martin Heidegger. After her German academic life came to a halt in 1933, Arendt carried her dissertation into exile in France, and years later took the same battered and stained copy to New York.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Arendt was simultaneously annotating and revising her dissertation on Augustine, amplifying its argument with terms and concepts she was using in her political works. The dissertation became a bridge over which Arendt traveled back and forth between 1929 Heidelberg and 1960s New York, carrying with her Augustine's question about the possibility of social life in an age of rapid political and moral change.

In Love and Saint Augustine, political science professor Joanna Vecchiarelli Scott and philosophy professor Judith Chelius Stark make this important early work accessible for the first time. Here is a completely corrected and revised English translation that incorporates Arendt's own substantial revisions and provides additional notes based on letters, contracts, and other documents as well as the recollections of Arendt's friends and colleagues.

Here, at last, is what can only be described as a riveting compendium of unheard stories, interviews, and quotes directly from the spiritual heart of the Beatles, George Harrison. Sourced from the extensive archives of rock biographer and historian Sripad Jagannatha Dasa, here is the quiet Beatle in his own inspirational words. The innate truth, wisdom, and sincerity of Harrison shine through in this touching audio tribute to the journeyman musician, composer, dedicated bhakti yogi, and humble gardener.

Although George insisted, he was only a regular guy, there is quite a lot of evidence to the contrary. Throughout his often magical, turbulent, unlikely life, he selflessly raised millions for charity and still does via the good works of his personal charity, The Material World Foundation. He was, too, the grandfather of world music, introducing audiences to be exquisite, ethereal complexity of both Indian music and the spiritually liberating Sanskrit mantras from the 5,000-year-old Vedic scriptures. Harrison was also instrumental in turning on a global audience to ethical vegetarianism, reincarnation, Hare Krishna philosophy, meditation, and, yes, even the thoughtful careful use of psychedelics.

In this one-of-a-kind collection, there are no journalists getting in the way of the purity of George’s expansive ideas and his carefully told personal history. Here is George Harrison truly in his own words, speaking across the waters of time to generations of dedicated fans still deeply moved by this simple man’s great music, philosophical importance, and well-deserved historical significance.
