Synopsis

The large Zeppelin Airship supplies the demand for a much faster, more luxurious, more comfortable and more safe long distance transportation. It is not restricted by the geographical limitations of the railway and the steamship. A Zeppelin can go anywhere, in fact the cruising radius of a Zeppelin is only limited by the size of the ship and the amount of fuel it can carry. The U. S. Government has concluded arrangements (June, 1922) with the Allied Powers whereby the U. S. Navy will receive a modern Zeppelin as a part of America’s share of the aerial reparations.

A Walk Through Rebel Dublin 1916 is a comprehensively illustrated guide to the Rising of Easter Week 1916, based on the significant locations of the rebellion. Dealing separately with thirty buildings and sites throughout the city – including the GPO, Liberty Hall, Trinity College, the Four Courts and Dublin Castle – the author provides a brief, fascinating history of the events and personalities that dominated these locations during Easter Week. A contemporary photograph of each location is juxtaposed with a photograph of the building or streetscape as it looks today. While some dramatic changes have taken place in the architecture of Dublin over the course of the twentieth century, there is much that has remained unaltered, as these images will testify. A Walk Through Rebel Dublin 1916 can be read and enjoyed without visiting the locations featured, but the reader is encouraged to walk the streets of Dublin, book in hand, to get a vivid sense of some of the most dramatic episodes in Ireland's history.

This unique blend of memoir and history takes “a multi-layered look at jigsaw puzzles . . . charming [and] fascinating” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).   Award-winning author Margaret Drabble weaves her own story into a history of games, in particular jigsaws, which have offered her and many others relief from melancholy and depression. Alongside curious facts and discoveries—for example, that the 1929 stock market crash was followed by a boom in puzzle sales—Drabble introduces us to her beloved Auntie Phyl, and describes childhood visits to the house in Long Bennington on the Great North Road, their first trip to London together, the books they read, and the jigsaws they completed.   With penetrating sketches of her parents, siblings, and children, Drabble shares her thoughts on the importance of childhood play, art and writing, aging and memory. And she does so with her customary intelligence, energy, and wit.

This pamphlet was published in the early 20th century by the United States Rubber Company so that "coming generations of our country ... have some understanding of the importance of rubber in our every day life... We believe the rubber industry will be better off if the future citizens of our country know more about it." Learn about Christopher Columbus's discovery of rubber, how the crafty British entrepreneur, Wickham, managed to smuggle rubber seedlings out of Brazil, and how rubber manufacturing came to be a "peculiarly American industry." The myriad uses of rubber from a century ago are also elaborated in considerable detail - everything from submarines to Keds to dentures. (Summary by Judy Bieber)
