Sinopsis

A compilation of first-person accounts from German soldiers on their experiences at the Battle of Stalingrad during World War II, featuring rare photos. Real battles. Real Soldiers. Real stories. By the fall of 1942, the battle for Stalingrad had become a fight for every street and building, and nowhere was the struggle more intense than in the bombed-out factories in the northern half of the city. There, amidst crumbled stone and twisted steel, German soldiers fought from room to room against a Soviet enemy who appeared never to tire. Meanwhile, Soviet offenses outside Stalingrad had trapped the German 6th Army inside the city. Erich von Manstein attempted to break through and relieve the encircled army, but to no avail. Both stories—the fierce battle for the factories and Manstein’s relief effort—are told here in the words of the men who were there.

Are you focused on what's wrong with your students? Now you can transform learning by reframing your view from what's wrong to what's strong.

"At risk." "Low." "Title I kids." If you've worked with students, you've probably heard or said these coded labels that reflect deficit thinking. This focus on weakness is a pervasive, powerful judgment that continues to harm students long after they leave school. It's time for educators to hack deficit thinking, think about SEL and about strength-based teaching, and reframe teaching and learning.

Nationally certified school psychologists McClure and Reed show teachers, administrators, and support staff how to unlearn student blame and reframe thinking to focus on students' strengths. When we acknowledge the impact of teaching practices and the broader structural inequities, we can help everyone reach their highest potential.

In Hacking Deficit Thinking, you'll learn how to: build on student strengths; think about student empathy; humanize your data; recognize the value of differences; think about teacher empathy; talk about equity in schools; tap into school-wide strengths; flourish as an educator.

In 1827 the first modern national crime statistics were published: the Compte général de l'administration de la justice criminelle en France. Before the onset of data criminology, the perception of crime relied on sources from classical antiquity, rational philosophical thought, travellers' observations, and unsystematic observations by criminal justice practitioners. With the new concept of national crime statistics, it became possible to test theories and hypotheses about crime using a shared data instrument, leading to an unprecedented avalanche of crime research by continental scholars.

Crime and Civilization: The Birth of Criminology in the Early Nineteenth Century explores the rise of data-based criminology as an intellectual field in continental Europe in the early nineteenth century. Janne Kivivuori creates a new interpretation of the era of "first criminology," one approached from the perspective of data and instruments, thus complementing the traditional story based on theories and explanatory shifts from "classicism" to "positivism" and beyond. Drawing on original French, German, and English publications, the book contextualizes the rise of criminology in wider cultural history, spanning from Enlightenment philosophers to the general rise of science in society.

Stay up to date in a fraction of the time with this concise guide.Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth and Happiness, by the Nobel Prize-winning economist Richard H. Thaler and the Harvard Law School professor Cass S. Sunstein, advocates libertarian paternalism, an approach by which individuals can be steered to make better decisions without taking away their freedom of choice. According to Thaler and Sunstein, humans are subject to biases and cognitive shortcomings which prevent them from always making the best decisions. By altering the way in which choices are presented, so-called "choice architects" can make people more likely to opt for a particular choice even if everything else in the situation remains the same. The idea of nudges has important applications in public policy, and the book has proved influential in numerous fields, from economics to philosophy. This book review and analysis is perfect for: • Students of economics, psychology and politics• Anyone who wants to know why we make the choices we do• Anyone who is curious about how public policy can shape our behaviourAbout 50MINUTES.COM|BOOK REVIEWThe Book Review series from the 50Minutes collection is aimed at anyone who is looking to learn from experts in their field without spending hours reading endless pages of information.
