Synopsis

Step Into a World Where the Heart Speaks in Every Shadow and Sunbeam.

Unlike the collectors of folk legends who came before him, Hans Christian Andersen did not just record stories—he invented them. This comprehensive collection showcases the work of a visionary who gave souls to toys, voices to nature, and profound dignity to the outcast. His tales are the bridge between the ancient tradition of folklore and the modern world of the literary imagination.

This collection captures the diverse brilliance of Andersen's imagination:

The Master of Personification: Discover the magic in the mundane as household objects, flowers, and animals are brought to life with distinct personalities and relatable human desires.

The Poetics of Melancholy: Experience the "bittersweet" quality that defines Andersen's work—stories that celebrate the beauty of the spirit even in the face of tragedy or unrequited love.

Themes of Social Justice and Mercy: Explore narratives that often champion the poor and the misunderstood, offering a sharp critique of vanity and social hierarchy.

Universal Transformations: Witness the physical and spiritual journeys of characters who must navigate a world of wonder and peril to find their true identity.

Andersen's stories have been translated into more languages than almost any other book in history, barring the Bible. His ability to touch the hearts of both children and adults makes this volume an essential cornerstone for any library of classic literature, fantasy, and inspirational tales.

Herbert George Wells (21 September 1866 - 13 August 1946) was an English writer. Prolific in many genres, he wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography and autobiography. His work also included two books on recreational war games. Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is often called the "father of science fiction", along with Jules Verne and the publisher Hugo Gernsback.
DOCTORS: In that extravagant world of which I dream, in which people will live in delightful cottages and ground rents will serve instead of rates, and everyone will have a chance of being happy-in that impossible world all doctors will be members of one great organisation for the public health, with all or most of their income guaranteed to them: I doubt if there will be any private doctors at all.

"I believe I've seen the end of the world... it's all smoke and noise and iron."

Margaret Hale, a parson's daughter from the genteel, sun-drenched South of England, is forced to move to the gritty, smoke-shrouded industrial town of Milton in the North. Horrified by the poverty and the harsh realities of the cotton mills, she quickly clashes with John Thornton, a self-made, stern mill owner who epitomizes the new manufacturing class. As strikes loom and the gap between "master and man" widens, Margaret and Thornton must navigate their deep-seated prejudices to find a common ground that could change both their lives forever.

The Heart of the Industrial Revolution: Gaskell provides a vivid, unflinching look at the birth of modern industry. Through Margaret's eyes, we witness the human cost of progress—the lung-clogging "fluff" of the mills, the desperation of the workers, and the rise of labor unions. Yet, through Thornton, we see the pride, ambition, and terrifying instability of the men who built the British Empire's economic engine.

A Romance for the Ages: Often called the "industrial Pride and Prejudice," the relationship between Margaret and Thornton is a masterclass in slow-burn tension. Their journey is not just one of romance, but of mutual education. Margaret learns to see the dignity in labor and the necessity of trade, while Thornton learns that authority without empathy is a recipe for ruin.

A Timeless Social Masterpiece: North and South remains startlingly relevant, exploring themes of economic inequality, religious doubt, and the struggle for women's agency in a male-dominated world. It is a story that proves that even in the coldest, most industrial heart, the warmth of human connection can still prevail.

Where iron meets heart. Purchase "North and South" today and experience the definitive industrial romance.

Sweetheart Roland is a German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm .A wicked witch had an evil daughter, whom she loved, and a good stepdaughter, whom she hated. One day, the witch decided she would kill the stepdaughter at night, and the daughter was told to make sure she lay by the wall, and her stepsister in the front of the bed. The stepdaughter overheard this and, after her stepsister slept, she shifted their places. The witch instead killed her own daughter, and the stepdaughter rose and went to her sweetheart Roland, telling what had happened, and that they had to flee.

    William Pett Ridge

William Pett Ridge was born at Chartham, near Canterbury, Kent, on 22nd April 1859.
His family’s resources were certainly limited. His father was a railway porter, and the young Pett Ridge, after schooling in Marden, Kent became a clerk in a railway clearing-house. The hours were long and arduous, but self-improvement was Pett Ridge’s goal. After working from nine until seven o’clock he would attend evening classes at Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institute and then to follow his passion; the ambition to write. He was heavily influenced by Dickens and several critics thought he had the capability to be his successor.
From 1891 many of his humourous sketches were published in the St James's Gazette, the Idler, Windsor Magazine and other literary periodicals of the day.
Pett Ridge published his first novel in 1895, A Clever Wife. By the advent of his fifth novel, Mord Em'ly, a mere three years later in 1898, his success was obvious. His writing was written from the perspective of those born with no privilege and relied on his great talent to find humour and sympathy in his portrayal of working class life.
Today Pett Ridge and other East End novelists including Arthur Nevinson, Arthur Morrison and Edwin Pugh are being grouped together as the Cockney Novelists.
In 1924, Pugh set out his recollections of Pett Ridge from the 1890s: “I see him most clearly, as he was in those days, through a blue haze of tobacco smoke. We used sometimes to travel together from Waterloo to Worcester Park on our way to spend a Saturday afternoon and evening with H. G. Wells. Pett Ridge does not know it, but it was through watching him fill his pipe, as he sat opposite me in a stuffy little railway compartment, that I completed my own education as a smoker... Pett Ridge had a small, dark, rather spiky moustache in those days, and thick, dark, sleek hair which is perhaps not quite so thick or dark, though hardly less sleek nowadays than it was then”.
With his success, on the back of his prolific output and commercial success, Pett Ridge gave generously of both time and money to charity. In 1907 he founded the Babies Home at Hoxton. This was one of several organisations that he supported that had the welfare of children as their mission.
His circle considered Pett Ridge to be one of life's natural bachelors. In 1909 they were rather surprised therefore when he married Olga Hentschel.
As the 1920’s arrived Pett Ridge added to his popularity with the movies. Four of his books were adapted into films.
Pett Ridge now found the peak of his fame had passed. Although he still managed to produce a book a year he was falling out of fashion and favour with the reading public and his popularity declined rapidly. His canon runs to over sixty novels and short-story collections as well as many pieces for magazines and periodicals.
William Pett Ridge died, on 29th September 1930, at his home, Ampthill, Willow Grove, Chislehurst, at the age of 71.
He was cremated at West Norwood on 2nd October 1930.
