Summary

"Fortress Defenses" explores the pivotal role of fortifications in military history, demonstrating how their design, defense, and methods of breaching have dictated the outcomes of conflicts across eras. The book reveals that fortifications were not merely static barriers but dynamic elements of military strategy, constantly evolving in response to offensive capabilities. For example, the introduction of gunpowder artillery revolutionized fortification design, leading to innovations like the star fort. Understanding these historical fortifications offers insights into technological advancements and strategic thinking that still resonate in modern military strategies and architectural security.

The book adopts a comprehensive historical approach, progressing from early defensive structures to medieval castles, Renaissance star forts, and 20th-century bunkers. Through case studies of famous sieges, it analyzes how fortifications were defended using various tactics and technologies, and how attackers developed innovative methods to overcome them. The strategic deployment of fortresses influenced the control of territory, the flow of resources, and the overall course of wars.

Ultimately, "Fortress Defenses" aims to show how the ability to design, defend, and breach fortifications has been critical in determining military outcomes. By drawing from archaeological surveys, military treatises, and architectural plans, the book connects architecture, military history, and social history to provide a holistic understanding of fortifications' impact on human history, making it valuable for military history enthusiasts and students of architecture alike.

Among those who were responsible for the projection of Ottoman power, few deserve as much credit as the Sipahi. Civilizations across the steppes and the Middle East relied heavily on cavalry, and the Sipahi were elite cavalry units during medieval times for a couple of powers. That said, they were a massive contributor to the success of Ottoman warfare, and during good times for the empire, the Sipahi were rewarded, to the extent that they became their own social class, much like the Janissaries. In fact, much the way the Janissaries became less effective over time as being one denoted social status, the Sipahi and Janissaries had class resentments among each other, one of the various cracks in the Ottoman Empire that would help bring about its decline.
As a result, the Sipahi’s private lives in the Ottoman Empire were varied and complex, depending on their social status, wealth, education, and religion. Their homes were often luxuriously decorated, and they were usually portrayed as highly-educated and sophisticated people. The Sipahi frequently had several wives and concubines, and their houses were equipped to accommodate their many guests. They had harems, where they kept their concubines and slaves, and the maintenance of their harems was important for each Sipahi's reputation and status. Their wives and concubines were often confined to the harem, and they did not have much freedom, but in some cases, especially in wealthier families, the women were educated and had an active social life. Furthermore, the Sipahi were often involved in art, music, and writing poetry. They had castles and villas they used for parties and social events, and they were also known for organizing hunts and other sporting activities. Many of them were also highly educated and engaged in the sciences, such as mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy.

What if chasing your dream didn’t lead to fame or fortune—but to something far more honest?
At 36, Pat Treuer had the life people post about: six-figure job, corporate status, an apartment with a skyline view—and a quiet voice in his head screaming, “Is this it?” So he did what any rational person would do: he walked away from it all to tell jokes in bars for drink tickets and half-interested crowds.
Then came the pandemic. Pat launched a comedy business that brought in a million dollars—then reinvested every penny into a YouTube series that made exactly zero. Not a typo. Zero.
By 42, he found himself not chasing the next punchline, but rebuilding a life from scratch. On purpose, this time.
Will I Hate Myself is a hilariously raw, painfully honest memoir about risking everything, failing gloriously, and learning to create a life that actually fits. It’s part comedy crash reel, part spiritual sledgehammer.
If you’ve ever wondered whether you waited too long to change your life, felt stuck in a “successful” version of someone else’s dream, or asked yourself, “Is this all there is?”—this book is for you.
Through panic attacks, bad gigs, and moments of absurd grace, Pat offers more than laughs—he offers proof that it’s never too late to go off-script and start telling the truth.
This isn’t about making it. It’s about making it count.
