Although Napoleon was exiled, he was allowed to retain the title of Emperor and was given de facto control over Elba. But it should not be surprising the man who once ruled Europe was not content with the island of Elba. Separated from his family and cast away on a small island, Napoleon attempted suicide by taking a poison pill, but he had first carried the pill with him on the retreat from Moscow, rightly concerned about an uncertain fate at the time. The aging process had fatally weakened the pill, which stopped it from fatally weakening Napoleon.
Though the emperor busied himself developing the island’s industries and had established a miniature army and navy, he must still have found time to brood upon his situation and could not have helped but think of himself as reduced to laughing stock. The “Emperor of Elba” was a poor title for a man who had once ruled over more than half of mainland Europe. Even some of Napoleon’s old Marshals, like Murat, now controlled more territory than the man who had raised them in the first place. To add insult to injury, the salary he had been promised in the Treaty of Fontainebleau and that was meant to keep him in relative luxury was often late and sometimes failed to arrive at all. Coupled with his deteriorating health and the express refusal of the Austrian court to let him speak or write to his wife and son, Napoleon must have felt himself well and truly slighted. Beaten, but not defeated, he resolved to show the Coalition powers he could still make Europe tremble.
Of all the incredible military feats Napoleon accomplished, none were more impressive than his escape from Elba and his return to France, which was literally a bloodless revolution. On February 26, 1815, Napoleon escaped from Elba, and in a desperate gamble, he landed on the French mainland with less than a thousand men and marched on Paris.

"Allison Raskin’s book unpacks the questions and uncertainties around marriage that so many of us have... a must-read for anyone and everyone that may be curious about the intricacies of modern marriage.” –Nick Viall, TV Personality, Host of The Viall Files, and Bestselling AuthorFrom Just Between Us cohost and bestselling author Allison Raskin comes a witty, incisive take on modern marriage and how a new generation can navigate its uncertainties and questions.Marriage rates may be on the decline, but that doesn’t mean marriage is disappearing from society. In fact, as modern relationship norms and structures continue to evolve, the public discourse about marriage has never been louder—or more conflicted. Divorce rates, the appeal of cohabitation, seemingly infinite options for future partners, the patriarchal roots of marriage and gender roles, and economic uncertainty are just a few factors that leave a new generation of single and dating adults wondering. What does marriage even look like now? Why do people still do it? And, most importantly, is it “for me”?With conversational wit and compassion, bestselling author Allison Raskin draws on new research, interviews with licensed experts, and the stories of real-life couples to break down the many pieces of today’s “marriage conversation”—and to make the leap of faith a little less scary for Gen Z and millennial adults like herself. What emerges is a thoughtful investigation into our cultural assumptions about commitment, compatibility, divorce, meaningful partnership, the future of marriage—and what it really means to join your bank accounts.

Farmers in some of the world's oldest agricultural areas were toiling year after year, only to find that modern industrial agriculture was turning on itself. Industrial agriculture's effects on our climate and environment were multiplying and worsening, until the very families growing the world's food were starving.

They terraced the land to catch more rainwater and prevent soil runoff; they planted a diverse range of vegetables that would balance the nutrients in the soil; they replaced commercial fertilizers with organic matter from their own farms; they planted more trees and drought-resistant grains; and, perhaps most importantly, they taught their communities by example that these regenerative farming methods paid off—both in nourishing their families and in bringing their land back to life.

Award-winning author and journalist Roger Thurow has traveled to Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, India, Guatemala, Peru, and the United States to share their stories, highlighting the conflicts inherent in our most important human endeavor: feeding the world using the methods of industrial agriculture is stripping the land of its ability to feed future generations. But these farmers are starting a new kind of revolution, nourishing both humans and the land, and following their lead could help us solve one of the great crises of our time.

Deception has always played a crucial role in warfare. From ancient times to modern conflicts, misleading the enemy has proven to be as effective as brute force. World War II was no exception, as both the Allies and the Axis powers relied heavily on espionage, misinformation, and psychological tactics to outmaneuver one another. Among these deceptions, one of the most remarkable and audacious was Operation Mincemeat—a plan so bizarre and daring that it seemed like something out of a spy novel.

By 1943, the tides of the war were turning, but victory was far from certain. The Allies needed a way to gain the upper hand against Hitler’s forces, particularly in the Mediterranean. Their goal was to launch a massive invasion of Sicily, a strategic island controlled by the Axis. However, they knew the Germans would expect such an attack, and without an element of surprise, the operation could turn into a disastrous bloodbath. British intelligence had to find a way to convince Hitler that the invasion was happening elsewhere, leading the Germans to divert their troops and resources away from Sicily.

This was the challenge that led to the creation of Operation Mincemeat, a plan conceived by British intelligence officers Charles Cholmondeley and Ewen Montagu. Their idea was simple in theory but incredibly complex in execution: they would take a dead body, dress it up as a fictitious British officer, plant fake documents on it, and drop it off the coast of Spain, where German agents were known to operate. The goal was to make the Germans believe they had stumbled upon top-secret Allied plans revealing an invasion of Greece and Sardinia instead of Sicily. If the ruse worked, it could save countless lives and change the course of the war.

This bundle offers a compelling and deeply insightful look into the complex and often harsh realities faced by both settlers and Indigenous peoples in Australia and New Zealand. This three-part volume captures the resilience, conflict, and cultural endurance that shaped these lands during their formative years of colonization and nation-building.
The first section, Surviving the Frontier: Australia’s Harsh Beginnings, explores the brutal and unforgiving conditions faced by early European settlers, convicts, and Indigenous Australians, shedding light on the challenges of survival, frontier violence, and the clash of civilizations.
The second section, New Zealand: A Nation’s Journey, traces New Zealand's path from a Māori homeland to a British colony and eventually an independent nation, while examining the cultural encounters, land disputes, and social changes that defined the nation's early years.
The third section, Aboriginal Australia: Land, People, and Culture, dives into the rich and enduring heritage of Australia's First Nations, exploring their profound connection to the land, complex social systems, and the ongoing struggle for cultural survival and recognition.
Together, these three perspectives provide a nuanced understanding of the human experience on the frontiers of Australia and New Zealand — highlighting both the resilience of Indigenous peoples and the challenges of colonial settlement. This book is essential for those seeking to understand the historical intersections of survival, resistance, and cultural identity in these two remarkable nations.
