In Germany, the most threatening and caustic radio personality was Mildred Gillars, known to the troops as the foreboding “Axis Sally,” but in Britain, one Nazi broadcaster became famous above all others. The man who became known as “Lord Haw-Haw” broadcast daily programs from Germany, introduced with a deliberate parody of the BBC by using the words “Germany calling…” These propaganda broadcasts were widely derided in Britain, but thousands listened to them every day and the distinctive voice of Lord Haw-Haw became as instantly recognizable to listeners in the UK as that of Prime Minster Winston Churchill. Although his accent was odd, he appeared to be British, leading so many of the Britons who listened to him to wonder who he was, and why he was broadcasting on behalf of the Nazis.
As it turned out, Lord Haw-Haw was an American who had moved among fascist circles in Britain before moving to Germany shortly before the war. He specialized in acidic diatribes against the men and women working for the Western Allies, broadcasting from Berlin and easily heard in London. Reports over the airwaves suggested that specific family members had died back home or that male siblings had been killed in action. Wives and girlfriends were reported to be unfaithful in a soldier’s absence by agencies who claimed to be aware of such matters. Enemy assaults upon the Allies’ willingness to fight were frequently followed with fictitious reports of American, British, or other collaborators’ defeats. Dire threats were levied against those serving in specific locations, with precise military information invoked for enhanced credibility.
Somewhat fittingly, Lord Haw-Haw’s impact on the war is still debated, and what happened to him at the end of the war is also the subject of arguments.

The Badshah growled once more. He dismissed the men holding the weapons and indicated to a group of men who wore iron claws. At his glance, two of them came near Sambhaji. One of them behind him and one facing him. From his neck to the spine and from his throat to his stomach, the men pulled his skin down as the trumpets and horns started blowing. The men shouted Deen Deen! Skin peeled off Sambhaji's back, neck, chest and stomach. His whole body was a bloodied mess.
But Sambhaji did not allow his voice to be heard by anyone present. He did not scream or shout. Clenching his teeth he bore the intense and almost unbearable pain. His body, now red with blood, shivered from head to toe. Like the milk which gathers at the base of the Shivalinga, his blood gathered at his feet. Aurangzeb laughed hysterically, seeing Sambhaji's body now peeled like the way a butcher skins a goat.

In the Socrates Meets series, Peter Kreeft revives the classic method of bringing philosophy to life through dialogue. In eight innovative volumes, he uncovers the principles, assumptions, and sometimes dangerous conclusions of some of history’s most influential minds. Each dialogue imagines a purgatory where we can listen in on conversations between Socrates and the great thinkers who, centuries later, picked up the philosopher’s torch. Each conversation investigates one of the philosopher’s key works, a short, readable classic that raises central questions both for philosophy and for life. In this volume, Socrates cross-examines Jean-Paul Sartre, the father of existentialism and author of Existentialism and Human Emotions, exploring human identity, atheism, morality, and meaning.

Ironically, when we think of fascism, we often look at someone as brutal and influential as Adolf Hitler, but the word “fascism” originated from Italian. The ideology that was carried out in the vicious Spanish War right before World War 2, and was embraced by Nazi Germany, was actually pushed and more or less invented by the Italians during a critical time in history when many changes were made, and when fear and uncertainty were all in the air. Mussolini was efficient and influential. He was a fearless leader not to be trifled with. Let’s take a look at what he did and why.
Throughout the interwar period, Mussolini, as totalitarian of Italy and creator of fascism, cultivated and promoted the worldwide development of fascist movements. His dealings were infamous yet organized. His nationalist ideals were something people wanted to hear in a time of crisis. It is not surprising, therefore, when we look back, that his ideas resonated with so many desperate souls.
