This book bundle offers a captivating journey through the rich and ancient histories of the Indigenous peoples of Australia and New Zealand. This three-part volume explores the deep cultural, spiritual, and historical roots that have shaped these lands long before European settlement. The first section, Ancient Australia, delves into the 65,000-year history of Australia's First Nations, examining their deep connection to the land, complex social structures, and enduring cultural traditions. The second section, Aotearoa New Zealand, explores the history of the Māori people, their migration to New Zealand, the development of powerful iwi (tribes), and their unique social, spiritual, and political systems. The final section, The Dreamtime and Beyond: Aboriginal and Māori Myths, brings to life the vibrant oral traditions of both cultures, sharing the powerful creation stories, ancestral legends, and spiritual teachings that have been passed down through generations. Together, these three perspectives offer a profound understanding of the ancient foundations of Australia and New Zealand, celebrating the resilience, wisdom, and rich heritage of their Indigenous peoples. Mary Ellen Bute: Pioneer Animator captures the personal and professional life of Mary Ellen Bute (1906–1983) one of the first American filmmakers to create abstract animated films in 1934, also one of the first Americans to use the electronic image of the oscilloscope in films starting in 1949, and the first filmmaker to interpret James Joyce's literature for the screen, Passages from James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, a live-action film for which she won a Cannes Film Festival Prize in 1965. Bute had an eye for talent and selected many creative people who would go on to be famous. She hired Norman McLaren to hand paint on film for the animation of her Spook Sport, 1939, before he left to head the animation department of the Canadian Film Board. She cast the now famous character actor Christopher Walken at age fourteen as the star of her short live-action film, The Boy Who Saw Through, 1958. Also, Bute enlisted Elliot Kaplan to compose the film score of her Finnegans Wake before he moved on to compose music for TV's Fantasy Island and Ironside. This biography drawn from interviews with Bute's family, friends, and colleagues, presents the personal and professional life of the filmmaker and her behind-the-scenes process of making animated and live action films.Zum Buch
The Spiritual Practice of Watching Movies What's your favorite Christmas movie? Easter movie? Pentecost movie? Casual viewers and movie buffs alike have favorite movies to watch at certain times of the year. But for film critic Abby Olcese, movies with spiritual themes aren't just limited to the holiday season. They're part of a deep human need to connect our favorite stories to the natural rhythms of our lives, and to let them shape and give meaning to our experience of the seasons all year long. The life of the church is also defined by stories, which we revisit through the pattern of the Christian year. In Films for All Seasons, Olcese invites us to reflect on the great themes of the church calendar through the lens of film. From superhero movies and Star Wars to classics and arthouse films, she chooses movies for each liturgical season and leads us through them with skill and infectious enthusiasm, exploring how each one can inform and deepen our appreciation of its corresponding season. Films for All Seasons is more than just a book about movies—it's a model for how we engage with art as Christians. Includes: - Explorations of popular, classic, and arthouse films and how they relate to liturgical seasons - Reflections on the great themes of the church calendar - Discussion questions after each movie designed to facilitate discussion with small groups and friendsZum Buch

An authoritative, unprecedented account of how in the early 2000s Canadian music finally became cool Hearts on Fire is about the creative explosion in Canadian music of the early 2000s, which captured the world’s attention in entirely new ways. The Canadian wave didn’t just sweep over one genre or one city, it stretched from coast to coast, affecting large bands and solo performers, rock bands and DJs, and it connected to international scenes by capitalizing on new technology and old-school DIY methods. Arcade Fire, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Feist, Tegan and Sara, Alexisonfire: those were just the tip of the iceberg. This is also the story of hippie chicks, turntablists, poetic punks, absurdist pranksters, queer orchestras, obtuse wordsmiths, electronic psychedelic jazz, power-pop supergroups, sexually bold electro queens, cowboys who used to play speed metal, garage rock evangelists, classically trained solo violinists, and the hip-hop scene that preceded Drake. This is Canada like it had never sounded before. This is the Canada that soundtracked the dawn of a new century. Featuring more than 100 exclusive interviews and two decades of research, Hearts on Fire is the music book every Canadian music fan will want on their shelf.Zum Buch
