Beschreibung

It was the last minute of play. The score stood 14 to 14. The teams of ’25 and ’26, the Freshman and Sophomore classes of Pennington Institute, were in a mad scramble on the gym. floor. It was the last game of the interclass basketball tournament and on the victory hung the school championship. Both teams had severely trounced the older teams of the Junior and Senior classes in a series of three games each, and likewise they had humbled each other, each class being credited with a game. This one told the tale, and it had been madly fought from the first whistle, as the score, chalked on the blackboard above the heads of the madly cheering crowd of students who lined the gallery running track, attested.

Before he wrote the Oz books, L. Frank Baum wrote this book which was the best selling book of 1897. Taking 16 beloved nursery rhymes, he explains their meaning and fascinating history. What is the true story of Little Boy Blue? Why was Mary contrary?
As he says in the introduction, "Many of these nursery rhymes are complete tales in themselves, telling their story tersely but completely; there are others which are but bare suggestions, leaving the imagination to weave in the details of the story. Perhaps therein may lie part of their charm, but however that may be I have thought the children might like the stories told at greater length, that they may dwell the longer upon their favorite heroes and heroines. For that reason I have written this book." L. Frank BaumBefore he wrote the Oz books, L. Frank Baum wrote this book which was the best selling book of 1897. If that isn’t enough to worry about, a few unlucky inhabitants of Fablehaven have been found petrified, turned to stone, including fellow satyrs. Newel and Doren become intrigued after an informant divulges information about a legendary Listening Doll—a talisman with the power to reveal the antidote for any magical malady—hidden somewhere in the Florida swamplands. If the mystical doll can solve any problem, maybe she has the answer of how to turn back the clock, so they won’t have to grow up. Perhaps a trip to Florida is just what Newel and Doren need to get their mojo in time to win the annual Satyr Games. Two new challengers, Barrett and Hoff, are talking smack about dethroning Newel and Doren as perennial champions. And the new?opponents have a smartphone! Treasure this beautifully illustrated collection of the Stories of the Saints by father and daughter writing team, John and Catherine Cavadini, with stunning portraits by Anastassia Cassady.

Through the stories of these saints, we receive new brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers in the faith. Each person's life tells the "story" of God's love in a specific and purposeful way. The vibrantly illustrated portraits bring these saints to life through shape and color, capturing their unique personality and diversity among the magnificent and beautiful "family of saints."

The stories begin with Pope St. John Paul II because he called the Church today to sanctity by giving us the gift of more and more saints.

The stories then move chronologically, from stories of Saints in the Gospels like Saint Joseph and Saint Anna, to Martyrs, Confessors, and Ascetics of the Early Church like Saints Ignatius, Monica, Augustine, and Genevieve, to Saints of the Medieval Period like Saints Francis, Joan of Arc, and Juan Diego, and to more Modern Saints, like Maximillian Kolbe, Dorothy Day, and St. Teresa of Calcutta.
As someone who owns dozens of books on saints, this book absolutely took my breath away.
It is weighty and beautiful, a meaningful addition to any family library.
The mix of saints, both historic and modern, are portrayed with original art that is vivid and evocative.
Readers will find both familiar saints as well as new ones to encounter, with art that is entirely compelling on its own.
This collection, Saints: A Family Story, is composed of stories the authors wrote for their own children and grandchildren and friends. They are adapted from Scripture, from original sources within the Tradition, and from the writings of the saints themselves or their family and friends. The saints are presented as a "Family," living in many different times and places.
