Beschreibung

"Secret Home Lore" explores the fascinating intersection between family traditions and residential architecture, revealing how generations have shaped their living spaces to reflect and preserve their unique customs. Through extensive research spanning from the 1800s to present day, the book examines how over 200 families across different regions have modified their homes to accommodate specific cultural practices and family rituals. The emergence of "memory rooms" - dedicated spaces for preserving family artifacts and traditions - stands out as a particularly intriguing pattern observed across various cultures and economic backgrounds. The book progresses through three main sections, beginning with a historical analysis of how immigration and cultural preservation influenced home modifications. It then delves into detailed case studies of families who maintained distinct architectural features across generations, such as specialized cooking spaces and gathering areas. The final section bridges past and present by offering practical guidance for modern homeowners looking to incorporate family traditions into contemporary home design. What makes this work particularly valuable is its unique combination of architectural documentation and ethnographic research, supported by building permits, family diaries, and multi-generational interviews. The text challenges traditional architectural history by emphasizing the active role of occupants in shaping their living spaces, while providing practical tools for families to assess their spatial needs and make informed decisions about home modifications that honor their cultural heritage.Through accessible language and rich illustrations, the book serves both academic researchers and families interested in preserving their residential traditions.

There are artists out there able to lift the spirits of the downtrodden, who point towards a better world with all they are. Sometimes, they do this in DIY punk style: raw, unplugged, and deeply human.Patrick Schneeweis, better known as Pat the Bunny, is an artist who chose the road less travelled, instinctively deeming it more honest and less controlling. Freer. He grew up in Vermont, where he found people liked his voice and the controversial topics he tackled, and by 16 years old, he had released his first album ‘Fire Hazard’.Pat had the courage to test his reality, and then nakedly vocalise it (in both the metaphorical and literal senses). His lyrics saw conflicting ideologies meet and fight to the death, in outlooks that were as captivating as his personal anecdotes were relatable. Pat’s journey offers direction to the lost, if only in the promise that so is he; and for all his youthful anarchism and burn-it-to-the-ground spiritedness, his commentary of the world is ironically sobering.Pat’s music career only spanned thirteen years, from 2003-2016. He reincarnated several times in different bands of his own making, and split albums with other folk-punk artists equally hungry to change the world. He fought like hell for a vision of peace, and made the battlegrounds his own state of consciousness.Like a flashfire burning everything in its wake, towards the end of his career, Pat’s had simmered down, but shoots of new life had sprung up from the ashes, a new direction for which his life could take. This book paints the picture of Pat’s fallings and risings, a final cadence before he left the punk scene behind him for good.

Nancy Shear was only fifteen when she began sneaking into Philadelphia Orchestra concerts through the stage door, and seventeen when she was hired as a member of the orchestra's library staff to help prepare the music; one year later, she became Leopold Stokowski's musical assistant. Being young and female, she was a pioneer in both positions.

I Knew a Man Who Knew Brahms takes listeners into the homes, studios, and minds of legendary artists with whom Shear shared close personal relationships, including Stokowski, Mstislav Rostropovich, Eugene Ormandy, and others with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Many of these brilliant and talented artists were also outrageous, egocentric, and tyrannical. Throughout this book, Shear topples more than a few revered musicians from their podiums and their pedestals.

A literary welcome mat to the beautiful world of classical music, this memoir is accessible and engaging for all. It brings listeners into rehearsals and concert halls, revealing the choices musicians must consider, and what conductors, players, and composers really do. A heartwarming story about passion, determination, and survival, I Knew a Man Who Knew Brahms explores music at its core. You will never listen to music the same way again, after hearing Nancy Shear's story.

The Inner Game of music is that which takes place in the mind, played against such elusive opponents as nervousness, self doubt, and fear of failure. Using the same principles of "natural learning" W. Timothy Gallwey developed so successfully for tennis, golf, and skiing and applying them to his own field, noted musician Barry Green shows how to acknowledge and overcome these internal obstacles in order to bring a new quality to the experience and learning of music. It is also ideal for those who don't play an instrument but who feel their appreciation of music will be enhanced if they understand more about the process of playing.

In precise, easy to understand language, Green and Gallwey explain how natural skills can be nurtured and enhanced, and through a series of special exercises they demonstrate the ways in which musicians can achieve exact intonation, artistic phrasing, and improved technique.

Ensemble playing, improvisation, composition and creativity, and listening skills are discussed throughout.

A methodology with a proven track record, this will be invaluable to anyone seriously interested in music, professional or amateur, composer, performer, or an appreciative listener.

When you’re learning to play the piano or electric keyboard, knowing what the lines and spaces on a staff represent and how the notes on your instrument correspond to those on sheet music isn’t enough to become a proficient musician. Although you’re a beginner, you can improve your abilities in many ways. You don’t only need to know the correct keys to press and when to play them. A vast world of music theory and compositional variety greatly changes certain aspects of a song and ways to craft and play musical pieces to express yourself more freely.
Having the knowledge to reproduce what you read on sheet music is a wonderful skill, but music isn’t about rigidly following directions. Every composer and musician should develop their style and form. You can hand a piece of sheet music to a dozen talented piano players, and each will perform it uniquely. The song’s structure is the same, but there will be little techniques and flourishes that set them apart from the others. How music feels when you play is as important as hitting the right notes in the correct order.
Everybody has to start somewhere when learning a new instrument. Thanks to the simplicity of the piano’s layout, there is intuitiveness to each key moving from one note to the next. They span from A to G♯ (A♭) and reset back to A so the cycle of notes can repeat. With practice, you will locate the correct notes without looking at the W 2 keyboard. It helps with reading sheet music since you can focus on it instead of constantly looking down at the keys. Once you have a handle on reading sheet music, you can play songs tailored to novice musicians in no time.
