  Almost 7,000 fans eagerly packed into the Ringling Brothers big top on July 6, 1944. With a single careless act, an afternoon at the "Greatest Show on Earth" quickly became one of terror and tragedy as the paraffin-coated circus tent caught fire. Panicked crowds rushed for the few exits, but in minutes, the tent collapsed on those still struggling to escape below. A total of 168 lives were lost, many of them children, with many more injured and forever scarred by the events. Hartford and the surrounding communities reeled in the aftermath as investigators searched for the source of the fire and the responsible parties.

  African mythology is a vast and intricate tapestry woven from the oral traditions of countless ethnic groups across the continent. The myths and legends of Africa are deeply connected to the land, the ancestors, and the spiritual beliefs that guide daily life. They reflect not only the diversity of the continent but also the shared themes that bind its cultures together.  
  Myths in African societies serve multiple functions beyond simple entertainment. They provide explanations for natural phenomena, such as the origins of the sun, moon, and stars, as well as the formation of rivers and mountains. Many myths are also tied to religious beliefs, detailing the actions of gods, spirits, and ancestors who shape the destiny of human beings. These stories help maintain social order by offering lessons about morality, justice, and respect for tradition. In many communities, mythology is a central aspect of spiritual life, reinforcing the belief that the unseen world is just as real and influential as the physical one.  
  Oral tradition is the primary vehicle for preserving African myths and legends. Storytelling is an art form, often accompanied by music, dance, and dramatic performance. The storyteller, known in some cultures as a griot, holds a respected position in society, responsible for keeping the wisdom of the past alive. These narratives evolve over time, adapting to new circumstances while retaining their core lessons. Because of this, African folklore is dynamic, shaped by the voices of those who tell and retell the stories.

  Scholars of US and transatlantic slavery have largely ignored or dismissed accusations that Black Americans were cannibalized. Vincent Woodard takes the enslaved person's claims of human consumption seriously, focusing on both the starvation of the slave and the tropes of cannibalism on the part of the slaveholder, and further draws attention to the ways in which Blacks experienced their consumption as a fundamentally homoerotic occurrence. 
   
   
   
  Utilizing many staples of African American literature and culture, such as the slave narratives of Olaudah Equiano, Harriet Jacobs, and Frederick Douglass, as well as other less circulated materials like James L. Smith's slave narrative, runaway slave advertisements, and numerous articles from Black newspapers published in the nineteenth century, Woodard traces the racial assumptions, political aspirations, gender codes, and philosophical frameworks that dictated both European and white American arousal towards Black males and hunger for Black male flesh. He concludes with an examination of the controversial chain gang oral sex scene in Toni Morrison's Beloved, suggesting that even at the end of the twentieth and beginning of the twenty-first century, we are still at a loss for language with which to describe Black male hunger within a plantation culture of consumption.
