Synopsis

Through 150 striking color photographs, Obama: The Historic Campaign in Photographs charts the road to Barack Obama's nomination as the first African American to lead the presidential ticket of a major party. Announcing his campaign in Springfield, Illinois, on February 10, 2007, Obama stood on the grounds of the Old State Capitol, where Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous "House Divided" speech against slavery in 1858. During an eighteen-month campaign, from the snows of Iowa to the hunt for Democratic "superdelegates," this junior senator from Chicago confounded the party establishment and rewrote the playbook on modern presidential campaigning. This amazing collection of photographs captures the public and private moments of his journey, and offers a unique window into one of the great triumphs in American politics.

"Perpetual Peace" is a philosophical work written by the German philosopher Immanuel Kant in 1795. In this work, Kant argues that peace can only be achieved through a world order based on international law, democratic governance, and the promotion of free trade.
Kant believed that war was a result of a flawed system of international relations, where states pursued their own self-interests without regard for the interests of other nations. He argued that in order to establish a lasting peace, a system of international law must be established that would regulate the behavior of nations and prevent them from going to war.
Kant also believed that a world federation of nations would be necessary to ensure peace. This federation would be based on democratic governance, where each nation would have an equal say in decisions that affected the world as a whole. Kant believed that this would help to ensure that the interests of all nations were taken into account, and that no one nation could dominate the others.
Finally, Kant argued that free trade was essential for peace. He believed that by promoting economic interdependence between nations, free trade would create incentives for nations to work together and avoid war.
Overall, Kant's "Perpetual Peace" is a seminal work in the history of political philosophy, and continues to be influential today in debates about international relations and the pursuit of peace.

The Inside Story of Ireland's Pandemic: Every Decision, Every Player, Every Text, Every Leak
Ireland's lockdowns were among the harshest and longest in Europe. As the state was battered by waves of disease time and again, unparalleled pressures and untold tensions emerged as the country went to war with Covid, and policymakers and politicians did battle with each other.
How were the key decisions made? Who held all the power?
Boasting unrivalled access to the key decision-makers and drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews and thousands of pages of documents, including confidential and unpublished material, Pandemonium reveals the moves, the power-plays and the – at times jaw-dropping – tactics of a government with the health of a nation in its hands.
'If a movie is ever made of how Ireland responded to the Covid-19 pandemic, Pandemonium may well provide the script … You will feel as if you were in the room when key conversations happened and decisions were made.' Professor Luke O'Neill

    Sample Key Takeaways:
    1) Consider the 48 Laws of Power your tools to perfect your art of indirection. Many of them are based on the writings of men and women throughout history who have studied and mastered the game of power.
    2) 1st Law: Never outshine the master. Even if you are better in any area than your bosses, never exhibit it to them. Otherwise, you may trigger feelings of fear and insecurity. You should be polite and kind to them, and do things that please, to stay on their good side.

A “gripping [and] splendidly readable” portrait of the battle within the British War Cabinet—and Churchill’s eventual victory—as Hitler’s shadow loomed (The Boston Globe).   From May 24 to May 28, 1940, members of Britain’s War Cabinet debated whether to negotiate with Hitler or to continue what became known as the Second World War. In this magisterial work, John Lukacs takes us hour by hour into the critical events at 10 Downing Street, where Winston Churchill and his cabinet painfully considered their responsibilities. With the unfolding of the disaster at Dunkirk, and Churchill being in office for just two weeks and treated with derision by many, he did not have an easy time making his case—but the people of Britain were increasingly on his side, and he would prevail. This compelling narrative, a Washington Post bestseller, is the first to convey the drama and world-changing importance of those days.   “[A] fascinating work of historical reconstruction.”—The Wall Street Journal   “Eminent historian Lukacs delivers the crown jewel to his long and distinguished career.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)   “A must for every World War II buff.”—Cleveland Plain Dealer   “Superb…can be compared to such classics as Hugh Trevor-Roper’s The Last Days of Hitler and Barbara Tuchman’s The Guns of August.”—Harper’s Magazine

As a progressive commentator on Fox News and now CNN, Sally Kohn has made a career out of bridging intractable political differences, learning how to talk civilly to people whose views she disagrees with passionately. Famously "nice," she even gave a TED Talk about what she termed emotional correctness. But these days, even Kohn has found herself wanting to breathe fire at her enemies. It was time, she decided, to look into the ugliness erupting all around us. In The Opposite of Hate, Kohn talks to leading scientists and researchers, investigating the evolutionary and cultural roots of hate and how simple incivility can be a gateway to much worse. She travels to Rwanda, to the Middle East, and across the United States, introducing us to terrorists, white supremacists, and even some of her own Twitter trolls, drawing surprising lessons from these dramatic examples—including inspiring stories of those who left hate behind. As Kohn boldly confronts her own shameful moments, whether it's the girl she bullied as a child or her own deep partisan resentment, she points the way toward change. No one is more poised to lead us out of this wilderness of hate than Sally Kohn. Her engaging, fascinating, and often funny book will open your eyes and your heart.
