Synopsis

In "Bay: A Book of Poems," D. H. Lawrence crafts a poignant collection that reflects his profound engagement with the natural world and human emotions. Characterized by its lyrical intensity and evocative imagery, this anthology delves into themes of love, loss, and the quest for understanding within the chaos of existence. The poems, steeped in Lawrence's trademark existential sentiments, often address the tension between industrial modernity and the serenity of nature, revealing a melancholic yet hopeful tone indicative of the early 20th-century literary context in which he wrote, as he sought to bridge the chasm between the psyche and the organic world. D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930), a pivotal figure in modernist literature, was influenced by his tumultuous upbringing in the coal mining regions of England. His exploratory nature, alongside his disdain for the mechanization of human relationships, informed his poetic voice. Lawrence's deep appreciation for nature, exploratory philosophy, and commitment to emotional authenticity resonate throughout this collection, which serves as a reflection of both his inner turmoil and the cultural shifts of his time. "Bay: A Book of Poems" is essential reading for those who appreciate poetry that melds the personal with the universal. Lawrence's evocative language and intense emotional depth invite readers to contemplate the beauty and fragility of life. This collection stands as a testament to the complexity of human experience, making it a must-read for scholars, poets, and lovers of literature alike.

Caleb Parkin's dark and mischievous second poetry collection Mingle stirs up the toxicities between landscapes, ecosystems and bodies, in poems bubbling over with hyper-wealth and haunted by tarnished ideals. Through creatures, compounds and chemicals, the poems probe what makes up our world's matter, and how we use it for good or ill. From gold to hydrocarbons, radioactive gardening to viral memes, the resulting mixture is a potent poetic cocktail…
Here, intimate connections and grand narratives are unsettled; we are implicated in prickly histories and weird futures and the natural world reminds us of its unruliness – as well as our own. Reflections warp in noxious ponds and voices distort and echo in uncanny landscapes. At times hyperreal and surreal, adventurous and technicolour, Mingle fizzes with the possibilities of queered language and altered states of poetic form.

Produced in 458 BC, Aeschylus' Choephori is the second play in the Oresteian trilogy. The bloodshed begun in the first play with the murder of Agamemnon by his wife Clytemnestra is here continued when Agamemnon's son Orestes avenges his father's death by killing Clytemnestra. It is not until the third and final play, Eumenides, that peace is restored to the family of the Atreidae. The introduction discusses the pre-Aeschylean 'Orestes' tradition in literature and art, as well as the place of Choephori within the Oresteia, its imagery and dramatic structure, the questions of staging the play, and the manuscript tradition.

‘Better to have questions you can’t answer than answers you can’t question.’

The author describes these poems as ‘stumblings’ because they are stumbling attempts to understand what can seem beyond understanding. In his writing he confronts the issues that are inescapably a part of being human, as he sees them playing out in the maelstrom of his own life. He takes us into areas of desperation, confusion, even despair, but also of acceptance, fulfilment, ecstasy, obstinate faith, and above all of tender love.

The poems range widely through philosophical musings, urgent questioning about what it is to be human, irony, self-mockery, overwhelming passion – and always with an intensity that acknowledges that everything matters, everything has meaning if only we could decode it. And throughout this volume the writer attempts to comprehend and reach the elusive God who
he believes in but fails so comprehensively to connect with as deeply as he longs to.

Any readers who are prepared to stumble with the writer on this poetic journey through life may find themselves in a place where they can at least begin to understand, accept, and even glory in their imperfect humanity as the writer does. And maybe hope to stumble into Grace,
    enlightened and affirmed.

In Johnny Jon Jon’s plays, seemingly ordinary events are turned into hauntingly profound exchanges when the individual’s sense of self comes under scrutiny.

In Hawa, a new Muslim convert finds herself tasked with overseeing the funeral arrangements of her partner.

In Potong, a son is sent away by a mother to return to Singapore to undergo the coming-of-age rites of passage that await him: circumcision and conscription.

Deftly alternating between beats of humour and tension, Jon Jon reveals how these characters contend with the paradigms, manifest or otherwise, that shape their existence.

Literature is a world of words and wonder, able to take us on almost unimaginable journeys from the wild and fantastic to the grind and minutiae of life.

An author’s ideas are his building blocks, his architecture of the mind, building a structure on which all else will rest; the narrative, the characters, the words - those few words that begin the adventure.

In this series we look at some of our leading classic authors across two genres: the short story and the poem. In this modern world there is an insatiable need to categorise and pigeon-hole everyone and everything. But ideas, these grains and saplings of the brain, need to roam, to explore and find their perfect literary use vehicle. Our authors are masters of many literary forms, perhaps known for one but themselves favouring another.

Story. Poems. Story. Within these boundaries come all manner of invention and cast of characters. And, of course, each author has their own way of revealing their own chapter and verse.
