Sinopse

The 'Spring and Autumn Annals' is a seminal historical text attributed to Confucius, encapsulating key events in the State of Lu from 722 to 481 BCE. This chronicle, written in a terse and cryptic style, employs an annalistic format that emphasizes political and moral lessons through the lens of Confucian thought. The work serves not only as a record of historical events but also as a vehicle for ethical reflection, intertwining the dictions of history and philosophy, and laying the groundwork for future interpretations and commentaries. Its significance extends beyond mere documentation; it challenges readers to engage critically with concepts of morality, governance, and virtue in the context of Confucian ideals. Confucius, a philosopher and educator in ancient China, sought to address the sociopolitical turmoil of his time through the promotion of moral integrity and proper governance. His life experiences, marked by witnessing the decline of the Zhou dynasty's authority, imbued him with a profound understanding of the pitfalls in leadership and societal structure. These observations significantly influenced his approach in crafting the 'Spring and Autumn Annals,' blending historical precision with philosophical inquiry to highlight the importance of ethical leadership. For scholars, historians, and anyone interested in the foundations of Eastern philosophy, the 'Spring and Autumn Annals' is essential reading. It invites readers to not only explore China's rich historical tapestry but also to reflect on the enduring values of responsibility and virtue that remain relevant today. This text is a cornerstone of Confucian thought and continues to offer profound insights into the nature of history and morality.

On January 16, 1944, the submarine rescue vessel USS Macaw (ASR-11) ran aground at Midway Atoll while attempting to get a towing line to the stranded submarine USS Flier (SS-250). The Flier was pulled free six days later, but another three weeks of salvage efforts failed to dislodge the Macaw. Then on February 12, the sea accomplished that task, nudging the ship into deeper water.

As night fell and the ship slowly sank, the twenty-two men on board sought refuge in the pilot house. By about 0230 Sunday, that compartment having flooded almost entirely, Burton gave the order to open the portside door and make for the foremast. Five of the men, including Burton himself, died, as did three sailors from the base at Midway in a pair of unauthorized and effectively suicidal rescue attempts that morning.

This book traces the lives of the Macaw and her enigmatic captain, from birth on San Francisco Bay to death at Midway. Ultimately, for Paul Burton and the Macaw the real enemy was the sea, and in a deadly denouement told here in riveting detail, the sea won. Highlighting the underreported role auxiliary vessels played in the war, A Strange Whim of the Sea should engage the military historian and layperson alike with the previously untold story it tells of struggle, sacrifice, death, and survival in the Pacific in World War II.

This book explores why there is a major war again in Europe. Putin's actions need to be understood if not forgiven. With the Ukraine conflict seen as a proxy war of NATO versus Russia, how likely is the fighting to spread?

The author, a highly respected journalist and political commentator, explains why Russia invaded a sovereign neighbor. To what extent did NATO's expansion to Russia's borders in the aftermath of the Cold War provoke Putin? Did the West's recent humiliating defeats in the Middle East and South Asia encourage Putin to exploit what he saw as its decadent strategic weakness and lack of resolve? What were the reasons for Russia's savage behavior in Ukraine? How might the Ukraine war end and what will the post-bellum world look like?

The war in Ukraine has had worldwide impact with cost of living, food and energy crises, and raised the risk of nuclear Armageddon by accident or intent. It examines the complex military and political issues in layman's language while the story is told as a compelling historical narrative.

Professor Moorcraft, who has worked in Ukraine and has witnessed Russian troops in action in Afghanistan, is superbly qualified to write this work.
