Synopsis

A rich man’s obsessive search for an heir blinds him to his own child in this classic Victorian novel of greed, pride, and family ties. For shipping magnate Paul Dombey, business is the essence of life. He runs his firm and his family with the same calculating efficiency. Showering attention on his sickly son, who is destined to take over the family business, Mr. Dombey diligently ignores his daughter, Florence. In his unloving eyes, she is nothing more than a “base coin that couldn’t be invested.” In time, despite her father’s neglect, Florence grows into a capable and strong-willed woman. Dombey’s callousness, meanwhile, sets in motion his own eventual downfall. In this classic tale of ambition, pride, and redemption, Charles Dickens presents a rich and sprawling portrait of a man, his dysfunctional family, and the complex times in which they lived.

Rebecca West’s stunning debut novel: The classic story of a soldier’s amnesia and its effect on the women in his life  A strange woman arrives at the door with unsettling news for Jenny and her sister-in-law Kitty: Jenny’s husband has lost his memory while fighting in the war. As their solider returns home, the women discover that his mind is stuck on the woman he loved fifteen years before—the same woman who first delivered the news of his memory loss and whom Jenny and Kitty regard as socially beneath them. As they care for him and react to this news, they come to understand the power of love—past, present, unrequited, and unconditional. Psychologically astute, West’s unforgettable first work of fiction reveals her innate skill at understanding the constructs of class that hamper people’s attempts to connect with one another.

BLOOD WOULD BE SPILT, LIVES CHANGED AND DECISIONS MADE.
When the Salish War Leader, Spotted Eagle appeared in the clearing before their cabin, life-long friends Gabe and Ezra weren’t sure what to think. This man had shown himself to be their friend, and now he invited them to join him and the village on a buffalo hunt. With winter just around the corner, it seemed the likely thing to do, but had they known what the journey would bring, they might have had second thoughts…
Gabe and Ezra’s discovery of the massacre of the Paiute village, and the three survivors that told the story, was just the beginning of the fight against the warring Waiilatpus. When the band of raiders also attacked the Salish and fled, it was up to Gabe and Ezra to seek some vengeance and recapture the stolen girls.
A pursuit across the lava beds of the Snake River plains, a fight in the dead of night, a thundering stampede of buffalo, and a horde of bugs that shrouded the entire valley, were just the added complications to a simple buffalo hunt, or perhaps more. The unorthodox ways of the two non-native men would earn Gabe more scars, Ezra a new name, the lasting friendship of the Paiute, and the gratefulness of the Salish.
