Synopsis

Bruce Bryden's true stories about the life of a bushveld conservationist draws on 27 years in the service of the Kruger National Park. It makes for a gripping read, abounding with encounters with elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard and rhino, whether darting for research, managing culling operations by helicopter or stalking on foot. In the best tradition of bushveld stories, there is a great deal of shooting, and a fair amount of running away; there are meetings with extraordinary characters among the rangers; memorable gatherings; hilarious mishaps and narrow escapes; and throughout, a great love and respect for both the wilderness and the creatures that inhabit it. Bruce Bryden started his career in the Kruger National Park in 1971 as a graduate assistant biologist. He progressed through the ranks as ranger, district ranger, park warden and regional ranger, eventually becoming chief ranger in 1983.

Brian Kinchen was a thirty-eight-year-old husband, father of four, and seventh-grade Bible teacher whose professional football career had been over for three years when the New England Patriots called on December 15, 2003. With the Patriots riding a ten-game winning streak and the playoffs only a few weeks away, they needed a fill-in for the obscure but vital job of snapping the ball for their punter and kicker—a long snapper. Brian had received similar invitations to tryouts that yielded only disappointment—the teams always went with a younger guy. But could he really turn away from the chance of a lifetime?
The Long Snapper chronicles Brian's remarkable journey as he and the Patriots seek the ultimate trophy. Unfortunately, the dream come true turns into a personal nightmare as Brian struggles both on and off the field, and the pressure to perform on the biggest stage in professional sports nearly causes him to walk away. Seven weeks after leaving the classroom, however, Brian overcomes his greatest fear and snaps the ball on the historic game-winning field goal with only seconds left in the Super Bowl.
As told by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jeffrey Marx, The Long Snapper is the story of a man who finally achieves the success he has always wanted. Brian Kinchen's championship ring is a powerful status symbol for all to see. But his journey forces him to reexamine what really matters, and he realizes the true measure of a man has nothing to do with status: life is not about prestige; it is about passion and purpose. It is about impacting the lives of others.

Poet, novelist, author of the Seth Material, Jane Roberts's books have sold over 7.5 million copies. She was one of the most important psychics of the twentieth century. Now, Speaking of Jane Roberts reveals a woman as fascinating as the material she produced.Susan Watkins and Jane Roberts were friends for sixteen years. Early on, Seth, the entity who spoke through Roberts, told the two women that they were counterparts, connected in this particular lifetime to work out some shared personal issues. In addition to being a compassionate and sometimes painfully honest look at Roberts's life--her difficult childhood, her constant questioning of psychic abilities and sources of creativity, her resistance to Seth's advice, her dramatic struggles with her health.Speaking of Jane Roberts is also a beautiful and applicable illustration of the counterpart relationship. The connection that Watkins and Roberts shared reveals something important about the power and mystery of the connections we all share with the people closest to us.* Watkins also offers original insights into the phenomenon of channeling.

Peter Liddle was a pioneer in the recording of memories of personal experience in the First World War and in the social background of those who lived through those years. Later he moved into the recording of men and women for whom the Second World War was the formative experience of their lives. In a planned two volume collection of the most outstanding interviews of the four thousand he made, for the first volume he has chosen memories which take the reader back as many as a hundred and twenty years to days in sailing ships, a Hebridean boyhood, suffragist action, pre–1914 working class life and work in the North-East of England, city life in London, service in the Boer War, pioneering a settlement in Manitoba, Canada, and the Army's experiments in the use of man-lifting kites, airplanes and balloons. The main focus of the book is upon the First World War with The Western Front battles, the Gallipoli Campaign and the Battle of Jutland prominently featured. Liddle also represents the Mesopotamian and East African fronts and women nursing under particularly unusual circumstances. Several Victoria Cross award winners and a fighter pilot ace appear, as do those whose distinction was to come later in their lives like Harold Macmillan, Henry Moore, Gordon Jacob, Emanuel Shinwell, Barnes Wallis and Victor Silvester. There is even an interview with the first conscientious objector to be court-martialed and sentenced to death before commutation of the sentence. This book is a veritable treasure trove of the past.

    The Kitchen Readings - Untold...

We’ve all seen the Johnny Depp and Bill Murray versions of Hunter S. Thompson--a larger-than-life madman, swilling booze with one hand and piloting classic cars with the other. But while Hunter’s legendary exploits in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” and “Hell’s Angels” and his other Gonzo tales are the public side of the man, there were very few people who were there when he let his guard down. Sheriff Bob and Michael Cleverly were there from the beginning of HST’s Woody Creek days to the fateful moment three years ago when he signed off for good.
THE KITCHEN READINGS is an intimate portrait of the private Hunter; these guys were there when the documentary cameras stopped rolling. As is the case in many less-infamous homes, Hunter’s de facto base was his kitchen--a place where he could see the TV, grab ice from the freezer, and fire off a few rounds of ammunition with equal aplomb. There he would hold court for a never-ending stream of locals, celebrities, friends, lovers, camera crews, children, and fans.
Braudis and Cleverly have recreated the reminiscences of all of Hunter’s antics throughout his Woody Creek years--from the day he replaced his guard dogs with guard peacocks to the nutty, off-kilter fans who would show up uninvited and meet with a less-than-cordial (and armed) HST to the time the mayor’s daughter was accidentally treated to a XXX video in a Kentucky Derby party mix-up to the final homage to Hunter that was a Hollywood-style blowout, replete with his ashes being shot out of a giant Gonzo fist.
THE KITCHEN READINGS is an essential keepsake for any Hunter fan. Sheriff Bob and Cleverly bring the man to life in a way that no Hollywood film ever could.
