Beschreibung

For readers of Paulette Jiles and Gil Adamson, a 19th-century tale of a father’s greatest regret and path to redemption

Devastated at his wife’s death and stricken at raising two girls and a boy on his own, Arthur Delaney places his children in a Halifax orphanage and runs off to join the Union Army in the American Civil War. The trauma of battle and three years in a disease-ridden prisoner-of-war prison changes his perspective on life and family.

After the war, Delaney odd-jobs his way up the American east coast and catches a schooner to Halifax. There he discovers the orphanage has relocated to a farm in rural Nova Scotia. His children are not there. They and others had been sold and resold as farm workers and house servants through the Maritime provinces, as well as Quebec and Ontario. Their whereabouts is unknown. Arthur Delaney sets out on a punishing 20-year journey across Canada to find them.

This is a heartbreaking, beautifully told story of a father’s attempt to reconnect with his children

"The Derelict" is a maritime horror story blending science fiction and cosmic dread. The tale follows the crew of a steamship who discover an abandoned, seemingly lifeless derelict drifting in the open sea. Upon boarding, they find the ship covered in a strange, gelatinous growth that appears inert—until it begins to move. As the substance engulfs the vessel, the men realize they are trapped in a nightmarish struggle against an alien, living organism that defies natural law. The story was first published in The Red Magazine in 1912.

The ancestral Gawama home is being rowdier than usual, clamoring for Marla’s attention at every turn. When the bewitched house unleashes a whole host of problems, and very vocal ones at that, Marla knows she’s in for a heaping, screeching serving of trouble.
She’s never in the mood for detecting, but this time? Marla also has her own personal ... complication to deal with, and this one’s here to stay. Who said your forties are too late to start over? Hopefully no one, because for Marla, starting over is the only way to go.

When art curator Madeline Carter steps into a Manhattan gallery, her life changes forever. Staring back at her is a portrait that shouldn’t exist—a painting of a woman who looks exactly like her. That woman was Amelia Knight, the late fiancée of billionaire Ethan Blackwood, whose tragic death left behind unanswered questions and a legacy of grief.
What begins as a chance encounter turns into a web of secrets, lies, and forbidden emotions. Ethan, haunted by Amelia’s memory, finds himself drawn to Madeline in ways that blur the line between past and present. But as Madeline uncovers Amelia’s hidden journal, she realizes Amelia’s death was no accident—it was murder.
Each revelation pulls Madeline deeper into Ethan’s world, where betrayal lurks in boardrooms and shadows follow her every step. Rachel Hayes, Ethan’s loyal assistant, harbors dangerous secrets of her own, while Daniel Pierce, his business partner, has everything to gain from silencing the truth.
Torn between her growing feelings for Ethan and the deadly risks of unveiling the past, Madeline must decide: walk away and stay safe, or fight for the truth and risk becoming the next victim.
In a story of love born from ashes, Billionaire’s Forbidden Desire is a gripping tale of forbidden attraction, betrayal, and courage—where the heart’s greatest risk may also be its greatest reward.

Arm of the Law by Harry Harrison - At one time—this was before the Robot Restriction Laws—they'd even allowed them to make their own decisions....
It was a big, coffin-shaped plywood box that looked like it weighed a ton. This brawny type just dumped it through the door of the police station and started away. I looked up from the blotter and shouted at the trucker's vanishing back.
    "What the hell is that?"
"How should I know?" he said as he swung up into the cab. "I just deliver, I don't X-ray 'em. It came on the morning rocket from earth is all I know." He gunned the truck more than he had to and threw up a billowing cloud of red dust.
"Jokers," I growled to myself. "Mars is full of jokers."
When I went over to look at the box I could feel the dust grate between my teeth. Chief Craig must have heard the racket because he came out of his office and helped me stand and look at the box.
"Think it's a bomb?" he asked in a bored voice.
"Why would anyone bother—particularly with a thing this size? And all the way from earth."
He nodded agreement and walked around to look at the other end. There was no sender's address anywhere on the outside. Finally we had to dig out the crowbar and I went to work on the top. After some prying it pulled free and fell off.
That was when we had our first look at Ned. We all would have been a lot happier if it had been our last look as well. If we had just put the lid back on and shipped the thing back to earth! I know now what they mean about Pandora's Box.
But we just stood there and stared like a couple of rubes. Ned lay motionless and stared back at us.
    "A robot!" the Chief said.
"Very observant; it's easy to see you went to the police academy."
"Ha ha! Now find out what he's doing here."

Katherine O'Flaherty was born on the 8th February 1850 in St Louis, Missouri to parents of French and Irish descent.
At age 5, she was sent to the Sacred Heart Academy and, apart from a 2 year period at home when her father died, remained there until graduating in 1868. Whilst there she began writing and became an avid reader of almost anything that crossed her path.
Kate married Oscar Chopin in 1870 and the couple moved to New Orleans, and later to the rural setting of Cloutierville, Louisiana to raise their 6 children.
In 1882 her husband died leaving her in a deep trench of debt. Despite her best efforts to turn the businesses around they were sold, and she moved the family back to St Louis and the financial help of her mother. Sadly, her mother died within the year. Kate, now struggling with depression, pushed herself to write and gained a local reputation as a writer of short stories that captured the local color and vibrancy of her surroundings.
By the early 1890’s her short stories were published nationally. With this widespread audience also came negative reviews, controversy, and cries of immorality as themes such as interracial relationships, the rights of women and other burning issues of the day were written about.
Despite the criticism, which unnerved her, she continued to write though in the main her works, around 100 short stories and two novels, were not attributed with any literary worth.
Kate Chopin died from a brain haemorrhage in St Louis Missouri on the 22nd of August 1904. She was 54.
For much of the 20th Century her work was forgotten and out of print. It was only in early 1970’s, with the rise of feminism and the call for a more just society that she was given the status her works had long described and shone a literary light at. She is now safely revered as one of America’s great authors.
