Beschreibung

August Strindberg's "Plays by August Strindberg, First Series" comprises a groundbreaking collection that showcases his mastery of naturalism and psychological drama. Through a series of innovative plays, including the notable works "Miss Julie" and "The Father," Strindberg explores the intricate dynamics of power, gender, and existential despair, utilizing sharp dialogue and a fragmented narrative style that reflects the complexities of human relationships. Set against the backdrop of late 19th-century Europe, these plays not only challenge societal norms but also draw upon Strindberg's own tumultuous experiences, creating a rich tapestry of emotional turmoil and philosophical inquiry. Strindberg, often considered one of the founders of modern drama, was profoundly influenced by his turbulent personal life, including his relationships and his struggles with mental health. His diverse experiences, from literary success to financial ruin, informed his perspective on societal constraints and the human psyche, motivating him to redefine theatrical boundaries. His works are characterized by a deep understanding of the human condition, presenting a raw and unfiltered examination of life that resonates across generations. "Plays by August Strindberg, First Series" is essential reading for those interested in the evolution of dramatic literature. This compelling collection not only provides insight into the intricate character studies and moral dilemmas that define Strindberg's oeuvre but also invites readers to engage with the universality of his themes. For scholars, students, and enthusiasts of drama alike, this collection is a riveting exploration of the depths of the human experience, securing Strindberg's legacy as a titan of modern theatre.

Fame often appears as a glittering prize, something to be coveted and pursued at any cost. Celebrities are lauded for their talent, beauty, and achievements, but behind the glossy magazine covers and red carpet events, fame can be a dangerous, even destructive force. The allure of stardom is frequently overshadowed by the realities that accompany it. The pressure to maintain a flawless public image, the constant scrutiny by the media, and the loss of privacy can all take a heavy toll on the individual behind the celebrity persona.
One of the most evident aspects of fame’s dark side is the relentless invasion of privacy. Celebrities are often followed, photographed, and filmed at all times, even in the most personal moments of their lives. The public’s insatiable thirst for information about their every move can lead to an overwhelming sense of isolation and anxiety. Even the smallest misstep is amplified, with celebrities often finding themselves under harsh judgment for things that would be overlooked in the lives of everyday people. The fear of being misrepresented or misunderstood is a constant source of stress.
Beyond the constant media attention, there is also the mental and emotional toll of maintaining a perfect public persona. The expectation to be both flawless and likable can create an intense pressure to conform to a specific image. Celebrities often feel the need to present a life that is far from reality, masking struggles and imperfections for the sake of maintaining their status. Many celebrities suffer from mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and loneliness, as they grapple with the weight of their fame and the desire to meet impossible expectations.

Cliché-verre is a technique of etching and painting directly on photographic negatives. The term means “glass negative” in French and is as old as photography itself, dating to the 1840s and earlier. The first successful photographic process involved coating glass plates with light-sensitive chemicals from which reversed (positive) prints could be made. Artists experimented with drawing, etching, and combining images directly on the glass, resulting in fanciful black-and-white prints. But few artists were inspired to develop the idea further until the advent of color photography in the early 20th Century.
The Magic Lantern, long predating photography, was invented by Christiaan Huygens, a Dutch astronomer and physicist, in the 1600s. It is a simple device for projecting images, based upon the centuries-old principles of the “camera obscura” or “darkened room.” When the photographic process evolved to
film rather than glass plates, the technology spread. Color film arrived in the 1930s. There were now both film negatives and positives (slides).
Brian Allan Skinner is the author of six volumes of illustrated fiction. His experiments with cliché-verre began in the 1960s. Here are 50 examples of his work from the past half-century, in brilliant color. In the epilogue, he explains his process in detail.

Taking the reader from Victoria's wild shipwreck coast to the artists' studios of revolutionary Paris and the bloody battlefields of Flanders, this sweeping novel reimagines the volatile history of the beautiful and enigmatic young woman immortalised in one of Australia's most iconic paintings. Created in Paris in 1875, Chloé, Jules Lefebvre's depiction of a naked water nymph, was brought to Melbourne's Young & Jackson Hotel in 1909, where it has hung ever since. In this passionate, luminous retelling, Katrina Kell seeks to unlock the riddle behind the girl on the canvas, known to history only as Marie. In doing so, she weaves the compelling story of an incandescent spirit - a woman with the strength to defy the boundaries of class and convention in order to survive, and an enduring power to influence the lives of others across time and distance.
