Beschreibung

In "Phineas Finn," Anthony Trollope crafts a masterful exploration of political ambition within the context of 19th-century British society. The novel follows the eponymous character, an Irishman with dreams of advancing in Parliament, as he navigates the complexities of politics, relationships, and personal integrity. Trollope's narrative style is characterized by incisive social commentary and a keen psychological understanding of his characters, enabling readers to perceive the intricate interplay between personal aspirations and societal expectations. The book is both a vivid depiction of parliamentary life and an astute critique of the class disparities inherent in the contemporary political landscape. Anthony Trollope, one of the most prolific novelists of his time, brings his personal experiences in the British postal service and his keen observations of the political arena to this work. His familiarity with the inner workings of Parliament, coupled with a profound empathy for his characters, informs the rich and relatable struggles faced by Phineas Finn. Trollope's own political engagements and a nuanced understanding of the societal constraints of his era fuel the narrative's depth and authenticity. "Phineas Finn" is a compelling read for those interested in the intersections of politics, identity, and morality. Its themes remain relevant today, providing modern readers with insight into the timeless dilemmas of ambition and ethics in public life. Ideal for both literary scholars and casual readers, Trollope's novel invites reflection on the nature of power and the sacrifices made in its pursuit.

Ms. Donna Haskins is an African American woman who wrestles with structural inequity in the streets of Boston by inhabiting an alternate dimension she refers to as the “spirit realm.” In this other place, she is prepared by the Holy Spirit to challenge the restrictions placed upon Black female bodies in the United States. Growing into her spiritual gifts of astral flight and time travel, Donna meets the spirits of enslaved Africans, conducts spiritual warfare against sexual predators, and tends to the souls of murdered Black children whose ghosts haunt the inner city.

Take Back What the Devil Stole centers Donna’s encounters with the supernatural to offer a powerful narrative of how one woman seeks to reclaim her power from a lifetime of social violence. Both ethnographic and personal, Onaje X. O. Woodbine’s portrait of her spiritual life sheds new light on the complexities of Black women’s religious participation and the lived religion of the dispossessed. Woodbine explores Donna’s religious creativity and her sense of multireligious belonging as she blends together Catholic, Afro-Caribbean, and Black Baptist traditions. Through the gripping story of one local prophet, this audiobook offers a deeply original account of the religious experiences of Black women in contemporary America: their bodies, their haunted landscapes, and their spiritual worlds.

Mob Rule in New Orleans is Ida B. Wells-Barnett’s searing investigative account of the 1900 lynching of Robert Charles and the violent wave of racial terror that swept across New Orleans in its aftermath. With unflinching clarity and journalistic precision, Wells exposes how police brutality, white mob violence, and institutional complicity united to create a deadly storm targeting the Black community.
Through firsthand reports, press analysis, and documented testimony, Wells dismantles the lies used to justify racist violence and shines a light on the horrifying consequences of state-sanctioned hate. This is not only a chronicle of one man's tragic fate—it is a landmark civil rights document and a bold act of truth-telling against a nation’s willful blindness.
Narrated with solemn respect and emotional gravity by Myriam Berger, this edition honors Wells’ legacy as a fearless crusader for justice and a foundational voice in America’s long struggle for civil rights.
    A historic warning.
    A record of courage.
A voice that still demands to be heard.

    Habit Forming - Drug Addiction...

Habitual drug use in the United States is at least as old as the nation itself. Habit Forming traces the history of unregulated drug use and dependency before 1914, when the Harrison Narcotic Tax Act limited sales of opiates and cocaine under US law. Many Americans used opiates and other drugs medically and became addicted. Some tried Hasheesh Candy, injected morphine, or visited opium dens, but neither use nor addiction was linked to crime, due to the dearth of restrictive laws. After the Civil War, American presses published extensively about domestic addiction. Later in the nineteenth century, many used cocaine and heroin as medicine. As addiction became a major public health issue, commentators typically sympathized with white, middle-class drug users, while criticizing such use by poor or working-class people and people of color. When habituation was associated with middle-class morphine users, few advocated for restricted drug access. By the 1910s, as use was increasingly associated with poor young men, support for regulations increased. In outlawing users' access to habit-forming drugs at the national level, a public health problem became a larger legal and social problem, one with an enduring influence on American drug laws and their enforcement.
