Beschreibung

Framley Parsonage is a novel by English author Anthony Trollope and the fourth installment in the Chronicles of Barsetshire, following Doctor Thorne and preceding The Small House at Allington. Like the other books in the series, it is set in the fictional county of Barsetshire and its cathedral town of Barchester.Amid the tranquil landscape of rural Barsetshire, ambition quietly disrupts the measured rhythms of clerical life. When the young and well-intentioned Reverend Mark Robarts comes under the patronage of powerful aristocrats, he believes he is securing a promising future for himself and his devoted wife, Fanny. But the allure of high society soon reveals its dangers. Flattered by influence, tempted by prestige, and entangled in financial obligations beyond his judgment, Mark risks both his reputation and his peace of mind.In Framley Parsonage, Trollope offers a nuanced exploration of the tensions between duty and aspiration, modesty and social ambition, personal integrity and worldly advancement. With subtle wit, psychological depth, and compassionate insight, he crafts a vivid portrait of Victorian provincial life—its politics, its courtships, and its moral dilemmas.Anthony Trollope (1815–1882) was one of the most accomplished and widely read English novelists of the Victorian era. Best known for his richly detailed portrayals of provincial life and the clergy, he gained lasting fame with his Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope combined psychological insight, gentle satire, and social realism to explore themes of ambition, duty, politics, and morality. A remarkably disciplined writer, he produced dozens of novels while working for many years in the British Post Office. Today, he is celebrated as a master of character-driven fiction and a keen observer of 19th-century British society.

As it is often said in fairy tales and historical analyses, Maša's childhood years were a time when empires were falling—the time of the war in Croatia, 1991. Underground Barbie is set in that era, but also in the sounds of her childhood, the music, and the atmosphere that accompanied Barbie's move from plastic, yet safe, dollhouses to air-raid shelters. Her Barbie was interpreted and narrated by a famous Croatian singer Tatiana Tajči Cameron, known to the Croatian public primarily for her wildly successful music career that burst out while representing Yugoslavia during the Eurosong competition. This is a story about the Barbie generation, which still remembers Yugoslavia and socialism but truly grew up and formed its views and interests in the 1990s. It is also the last generation that seriously played with dolls. Later, electric toys prevailed, the family as the fundamental unit of society and children’s play disintegrated, and dolls became as unconvincing as fairy tales had a few decades earlier.
Maša Kolanović published several scholarly works and literary works: the poetry collection Leeches for the Lonely (2001), the novel Sloboština Barbie (2008), the prose poem Jamerika Trip (2013), and the short story collection Dear Insects and Other Creepy Stories (2019) for which she received the Vladimir Nazor Award, the European Union Prize for Literature, and the Libar za vajk Award, and was a finalist for the Fric Award. She is an associate professor in the Department of Croatian Studies at the University of Zagreb.
The publication of Underground Barbie audiobook is co-funded by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia.

The founder of Byrner, a global social media platform, Gerald Byrne is universally admired as a visionary, a philanthropist, and a devoted husband and father. And every person who gets in the way of his good work seems to die.

When a former student commits suicide, English professor and ex-spy Cameron Winter takes it upon himself to understand why. The young man was expelled from the university in an unfortunate episode that left Winter sympathetic to his plight; after a prolonged silence, he reached out to his teacher with two words just before taking the fatal plunge from the roof of his San Francisco apartment: "Help me."

Winter has what he calls "a strange habit of mind"—the ability to imagine himself into a crime scene, to reconstruct it mentally and play through various possible causes and outcomes to understand exactly what took place. When he applies this exercise to Adam Kemp's desperate final moments, he discovers a troubling inconsistency. And when he learns that Kemp was in a tumultuous relationship with Gerald Byrne's niece, he begins to suspect that the suicide was the result of a carefully-engineered plot, put in motion by the powerful businessman.
