Beschreibung

In "Why I Do Not Believe in God," Annie Besant presents a compelling examination of spirituality and religious belief, challenging the traditional tenets of organized religion through a rationalist lens. The book eloquently articulates her views on the nature of divinity, intertwining personal anecdotes with philosophical discourse. Besant employs a clear and persuasive literary style, adeptly utilizing logical arguments and emotional appeals to engage readers. Set against the backdrop of the late 19th century, a period marked by intellectual awakening and skepticism towards established doctrines, this work serves as a significant contribution to the dialogue surrounding atheism and humanism. Annie Besant was a notable theosophist, social reformer, and advocate for women's rights whose vast experiences shaped her worldview. Born in 1847 in London, her early involvement in social justice issues and her later embrace of Theosophy informed her critique of traditional religious practices. Besant's commitment to reason and social progress led her to examine the implications of belief on individual and societal well-being, ultimately compelling her to articulate her non-belief. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in the intellectual currents of the time and the merging of spirituality with rational thought. Besant's arguments resonate with contemporary discussions on belief and skepticism, making it a riveting exploration for both scholars and general readers alike.

"This ethnography is more like a film than a book, so well does Stoller evoke the color, sight, sounds, and movements of Songhay possession ceremonies."—Choice "Stoller brilliantly recreates the reality of spirit presence; hosts are what they mediate, and spirits become flesh and blood in the 'fusion' with human existence. . . . An excellent demonstration of the benefits of a new genre of ethnographic writing. It expands our understanding of the harsh world of Songhay mediums and sorcerers."—Bruce Kapferer, American Ethnologist "A vivid story that will appeal to a wide audience. . . . The voices of individual Songhay are evident and forceful throughout the story. . . . Like a painter, [Stoller] is concerned with the rich surface of things, with depicting images, evoking sensations, and enriching perceptions. . . . He has succeeded admirably." —Michael Lambek, American Anthropologist "Events (ceremonies and life histories) are evoked in cinematic style. . . . [This book is] approachable and absorbing—it is well written, uncluttered by jargon and elegantly structured."—Richard Fardon, Times Higher Education Supplement "Compelling, insightful, rich in ethnographic detail, and worthy of becoming a classic in the scholarship on Africa."—Aidan Southall, African Studies Review

This book consists of five titles related to Native American history, which are the following:
1 - Geronimo: Geronimo, a legendary Apache leader and medicine man from the Bedonkohe band, played a pivotal role in resisting Mexican and American military forces during the 19th century. Between 1850 and 1886, he worked with warriors from three other Chiricahua Apache bands to carry out daring raids and resist encroachments on Apache lands.
2 - Pocahontas: Pocahontas was a Native American woman from the Powhatan-speaking tribe, most famous for her connection to the colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. She was the daughter of Powhatan, the powerful chief of Tsenacommacah, a confederation of about 30 Algonquian-speaking tribes in the Tidewater region of Virginia.
3 - Pontiac's War: Pontiac's War, also referred to as Pontiac's Conspiracy or Pontiac's Rebellion, was a significant conflict that emerged in the aftermath of the French and Indian War (1754–1763). In 1763, a coalition of Native American tribes, disillusioned with the increasing British presence and control in the Great Lakes region, united under the leadership of the Odawa chieftain Pontiac.
4 - Seminole Wars: The Seminole Wars, also known as the Florida Wars, were a series of three interconnected military conflicts that took place in Florida between the United States and the Seminole people, a group of Native Americans who had established themselves in the region during the early 1700s.
5 - Trail of Tears: The Trail of Tears was a harrowing series of forced relocations that took place between 1830 and 1850, impacting approximately 60,000 American Indians from the so-called "Five Civilized Tribes." These tribes, which included the Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw nations, were driven from their ancestral lands in the Southeastern United States to designated areas in the west.

After a brutal assault in NYC, Haely moves to San Francisco to try and reinvent herself. Unfortunately, she isn’t prepared to teach in the men’s county jail, and all the inmates know it. Drawn into a reckless romance with Ghost, a charming but calculating burglar she meets inside, Haely's obsession with uncovering his disturbing secrets thrusts her into a waking nightmare of drugs and violence, from which she may not survive.
Meanwhile in Prague, frat boy Otto Tepidstein grapples with the emotional fallout of having been cheated on. His quest for unattainable justice leads him down a Kafka-esque rabbit hole into Prague's gritty underworld of sexual depravity. There he has a chance encounter with Milka, a phlebotomist seemingly out of place in the world of sex work.
When an unsettling video surfaces on a porn site, depicting unspeakable acts, the twisted connections between these four troubled souls leads each one to their own irreversible fate.
In this lurid tale, based on true events, we discover that no matter our backgrounds, we all stand on the brink—one poor choice away from an abyss of self-destruction from which there is no return. As Nietzsche said, "sometimes you stare into the hole, and sometimes the hole stares back."
