Synopsis

A mysterious woman. A decaying mansion. A past she's running from—and a future society won't allow.

In The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Anne Brontë crafts one of the boldest and most revolutionary novels of the 19th century. When Helen Graham arrives at the crumbling Wildfell Hall with her young son, local gossip swirls. But beneath her quiet exterior lies a powerful story of independence, artistic strength, and the refusal to submit to a corrupt marriage.

Told through dual perspectives, this novel blends gothic atmosphere, romance, and moral realism to expose the hypocrisies of Victorian society. Far ahead of its time, it remains one of literature's most powerful portraits of female resilience.

Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, The Red Badge of Courage tells the story of Henry Fleming, a young private in the Union Army who flees from the horror of battle and then struggles with shame and self-loathing. Outstanding in its portrayal of the quiet tension and violent emotion of war, this powerful psychological study of a young soldier will strike listeners with its undeniable realism. With its masterful description of men under fire, many veterans— both Union and Confederate— praised the novel for its accurate representation of war. This recording is narrated by actor Richard Thomas, who portrayed Private Fleming in the 1974 television adaption of the Stephen Crane classic.

"The Adventure of the Gloria Scott", is one of 12 stories in the collection, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. This story is related mainly by Holmes rather than Watson, and is the first case to which Holmes applied his powers of deduction, having treated it as a mere hobby until this time.
This is one of the two Sherlock Holmes stories in which a protagonist is haunted by an old acquaintance for an old crime. It is also one of his many stories that deal with the fate of characters who return to England after having spent time abroad in the colonies of the British empire.

Captain Frederick Marryat (10 July 1792 - 9 August 1848) was a Royal Navy officer, a novelist, and an acquaintance of Charles Dickens. He is noted today as an early pioneer of nautical fiction, particularly for his semi-autobiographical novel Mr Midshipman Easy (1836). He is remembered also for his children's novel The Children of the New Forest (1847), and for a widely used system of maritime flag signalling known as Marryat's Code.
THE CLUB-HAULING OF THE DIOMEDE: We continued our cruise along the coast, until we had run down into the Bay of Arcason, where we captured two or three vessels, and obliged many more to run on shore.
