With 300 stunning photographs, this pictorial history of tramp trade ships illustrates the evolution of these charming, itinerant merchant vessels. The tramp ship was the taxi of the seas. With no regular schedules, it voyaged anywhere and everywhere, picking up and dropping off cargoes, mainly bulk cargoes such as coal, grain, timber, china clay and oil. Older and slower vessels tended to find their way into this trade, hence the tag 'tramp'—but new tramps were also built for the purpose. In this beautiful volume featuring 300 photographs, Roy Fenton illustrates the Tramp Ship’s evolution over the course of more than 100 years, from the 1860s, when the steam tramp developed from the screw collier, until it was largely replaced by the specialist bulk carrier in the 1980s. Fenton offers fascinating background information on the design and building of tramps. He describes the machinery, from simple triple-expansion turbines to diesel engines. Their operation and management and the life of the officers and crews are also covered. This illustrated history journeys through the last years of the 19th century, the two world wars, and the postwar years. Photo captions provide each ship’s dimensions, owners, and builder. Each ship’s career is outlined with notes on trades and how they changed over a ship's lifetime.

A serious look at the lyrics of metal’s biggest band, disentangling double meanings, explaining stories, uncovering sources, and illuminating themes such as hope, despair, rage, resilience, power, liberty, justice, love, death, and insanity.

More than 40 years since their formation, and 125 million album sales later, Metallica is as relevant as ever. Much has been written about the band, but The Meaning of Metallica is the first book to focus exclusively on their lyrics.

Their mighty guitar riffs and pounding drums are legendary, but Metallica’s words match the intensity of their tunes. Lead singer James Hetfield writes rock poetry dealing with death, war, addiction, alienation, corruption, freedom, religion, and other weighty topics. Painting a rainbow of emotions with a deft palette, subtle but not obscure, Hetfield’s lyrics deserve careful attention. A master of narrative, Metallica makes listeners care about a vast array of characters, from a vengeful God, to a suicidal teenager, to a man in mid-life crisis.

The Meaning of Metallica is like a riveting conversation with a close friend. A thematic tour de force that traces Hetfield’s lyrical development across the decades, this companion examines everything from deep cuts like “Confusion” to megahits like “Enter Sandman.” Sure to spark debate and discussion, The Meaning of Metallica provides a close reading of lyrics dense with details and rich with allusions.

The French philosopher’s treatise on the nature of art and poetry includes enlightening critiques of major painters and dialogues with notable writers.Originally published in 1935 with the title Frontières de la Poésie, this work by Jacques Maritain explores the nature and subjectivity of art and poetry. As a philosopher, Maritain attempts to define the two concepts, describing them as virtuous, being primarily concerned with beauty. Rather than focusing on aesthetic theory, Maritain examines his ideas at a more tangible level, including a discussion of how art and poetry are produced.Art and Poetry further develops the principles established in Maritain’s earlier work, Art and Scholasticism, which has deeply influenced contemporary artists. Those concepts are employed here to illuminate the creative works of such diverse artists as Georges Rouault, Marc Chagall, Gino Severini, and Arthur Lourié. Maritain also relates fascinating dialogues with notable authors such as André Gide, Jean Cocteau, and others.

Look Who It Is!: My Story

Famed for his gentle innocence and brilliant observational wit, comedian Alan Carr describes his childhood growing up in a football-mad family in Northampton and his rise to become one of Britain’s best-loved comedians.
‘Puberty had been unkind. Whereas it had come in the night and left the other boys with chiselled, stubbly chins and deep masculine voices, I’d been left with a huge pair of knockers and the voice of a pensioner.’ Alan Carr
Alan Carr grew up in one of the most boring towns in England – Northampton. A place known for making shoes. It was also famous for its football club, Northampton Town FC. Alan’s dad as manager of the club was a local hero. A dream come true for most lads, but not Alan. Alan wore glasses and had man boobs at 14. He did not like P.E.
In his very first book, Alan tells his life story (‘oh and what a life’) with his unique twist of natural, observational humour –
‘I’m not saying I’m a fantasist but there have been times when things that I’ve seen on television when I was younger have tended to seep into my subconscious and blended into my own life. I remember telling my Mum about the time I stopped that woman from having a diamond encrusted necklace stolen and she’d say ‘No Alan, that was Poirot.’
With his tongue-in-cheek, end of pier humour that has made him famous, Alan describes an ordinary life in bursts of technicolour. His journey from awkward schoolboy hiding his man-boobs on the pitch, drinking tea with the dinner ladies and working in a call centre, to becoming one of our best-loved comedians likened to the great Frankie Howerd, will make his book a guaranteed tickler with a laugh-out-loud gag on every page.
From a football-mad family in Northampton to the heights of the performing arts, Alan Carr's Sunday Times bestselling autobiography is a testament to his talent and perseverance. His unique sense of humour and honesty make this biography a standout in the entertainment genre.
For fans of Graham Norton (The Life and Loves of a He Devil), Romesh Ranganathan (As Good As It Gets), Sarah Millican (How to be Champion), Louis Theroux (Theroux The Keyhole), and Miriam Margolyes (Oh Miriam!).
